Finally!
This is going to be so great. :-)
Eeeh. The staff sure knows how to tease users, now don't they? ;-) I wonder if they sit at their desks, laughing their arms off at the community's suggestions.
Anyway, this, complete with something I've read in the Alternative Gift thread, makes me inclined to think it's a new, big publisher announcement.

Catshade: My 'safest' bet is either id software or LucasArts. They have experienced success recently in distributing their old games through DD channels

Doesn't sound very likely to me. If they're going to be building expectations like this it'd better be something much more substantial than merely adding publishers who are already publishing old games on Steam...

My interpretation of the "unexcelled" clue is slightly different than some of the other guesses listed so far. In this case it makes me believe it has to do with the subject matter of the game, a game whose central character is unremarkable, average perhaps even downright a loser.
For some reason I keep returning to the same game, either: Leisure Suit Larry or the Space Quest series.
Les Manley in: Search for the King http://www.mobygames.com/game/les-manley-in-search-for-the-king perhaps?
The mind boggles at the possibilities... o_O
Oh please let it be Deus EX, and id Software's catalog as well :D
could be the next version of the site?

darthcobley: could be the next version of the site?

As much as I love GOG, a next version (or out of beta) of the site will not instantly make it 'unexcelled.' :P

It's a Thursday announcement, so a deal with a major publisher sounds likely.

Surely it could just be a game with a reputation as being it's best in it's own genre, rather than the best pc game - whatever that may be?
Deus Ex sounds likely from the discussion so far, what with the Ex and it's reputation etc. But then as someone mentioned already, is that one game likely to justify a countdown?
Perhaps Deus Ex is one game among many becoming available out of a new publisher deal - if Deus Ex is available it would be with Eidos, making even Tomb Raider or Thief games a possibility. They're both highly regarded in themselves.
As much as it's likely related to Deus Ex i would love it if it was Team 17 XD

That would be too easily surpassed by subsequent versions of the site.
Perhaps games from other systems that not just PC?
I´d love to see MSX games. :p
Putting my dreams aside, I agree it sounds more like a big publisher coming to GOG.
LucasArts would be soo soo soo soo awesome, all the great point and clicks and x wing would be soo good

Catshade: If it's related to new publisher partner, My 'safest' bet is either id software or LucasArts. They have experienced success recently in distributing their old games through DD channels, and I assume they're not as 'difficult' as the big publishers (EA/Activision/SE-Eidos) to secure a deal.
Edit: Oh, and the countdown timer seems fine on my side.
My crystal ball is telling me "GoG forum beta 2.0".
I'm wondering what that means.

melchiz: Unexcelled...
Excella...
Resident Evil...
CAPCOM...
Megaman!

Sounds like the most reasonable answer so far.
Bring on the crappy PC Megaman ports!
