It is really odd that people like STO.
I played pretty much every AAA mmo from the days of Ultima Online. However I have to say that STO was the worst MMO of them all, infact I uninstalled STO after playing it for 1 hour without any joy.

To each their own.

I think it's REALLY odd that 17 million people like World of Warcraft. It has single-handedly turned our school football team into huge gamers, which is sort of good, but then keeps them from doing well on the sports side.

17 million now? Jesus Christ on a peanut butter sandwich.

xabbott: I am in the beta, and I can't believe people are playing the same game as me.
It's Champions Online...with space stuff. Anyone who played Champions (like myself), would know not to give this company more money.
They seem to have a business plan of taking games that need 3-4 years of development and shipping them in 2. How does this work out? Well you just hype, get pre-order money, get lifetime subscription suckers, and offer 6-12 month subs.
In any case, one of the main problems carried over from CO is the graphics engine. I thought it was an Nvidia issue but 3 systems (1 with ATI) and it has been bad across the board.

TheCheese33: My major problem with Champions is that they made it painfully obvious that it wasn't going to be their most awesome game. In fact, the most awesome game they've made, Star Trek Online, was used to get people to order more 6, 12, and lifetime subscriptions.
I am against buying lifetime subscriptions for something like this unless I know they will last, but I am more than happy to keep playing each month, because unlike Champions, this is really, really fun.

If I had my time back, I would have JUMPED on the LOTRO lifetime for $200, and likely would have 100 or so less Steam games, and no GOG's.

Your school must have a terrible athletics department. Division III, yeah?

not to judge or anything but after one hour?
how can you judge any game after a single hour? especially a mmorpg. spend a weekend on it and then judge how shitty it is :)

You can make an initial assessment as to whether it is worth playing. If a game requires multiple hours of play to become enjoyable, I consider it poor design. But yeah, because MMOs are designed to replace 40 hour work weeks (I hope you file for unemployment before starting!), players should reserve final judgement for the 100 hour mark.

i still believe one hour is not enough to judge any game (unless it is really bad which is not the case with STO) unless of course it is of genre which you hate (give me one hour with a football manager and i will tell you it suck and it will be justified :D )
1 hour is plenty of time to spot a shitty set of controls or awful story, plenty of demos have saved me money by demonstrating those 2 deal breakers in less than an hour

Actually, they used to be among the best of the best. Carroll Dragons. Then our awesome coach left, and things went south.
Is it me, or is targeting enemies (especially in away missions) only possible when you've actually got line of site? Makes it really annoying to target the nearest enemy when he's to your left, for example.

Ugh, tell me about it. We lost a great coach to drama and now we suck.

Yeah it seems to be, the same is true of space combat actually, its just that the autotargetting is better there (maybe because ships have 360 degree sensors) and tends to switch to other targets automatically. On ground missions I just never take my finger off the right mouse button unless I need the cursor

I sure hope that LOS only targeting is a bug. As if that's intended my desire to keep playing this game just slipped into negatives. Which would be a shame as I'm slowly starting to enjoy the game but that targeting is really annoying.
I also sometimes find my ship apparently standing still even with engines on full, but can't tell if that's just due to a lack of decent reference points at times to help gauge actual movement. Although other ships still appear to move normally. Such as in the mission where you need to survive for a couple of missions against Species 8472 (or whatever Cryptic decided to name them). While their ship is running circles around me, no matter what I did with my engines, I just didn't seem to move at all. =/
