Here's a little gem people rarely talked about. It's called Kino no Tabi or Kino's Journey. A unique anime where the protagonist went to various city states with its own quirks. Sometimes they are weird and pretty symbolic and sometimes they are pretty much dangerous. It's like entering different twilight zones. Watch it for the philosophy.

Hm. Let's see. Where to begin. Historical. Well there's the Rose of Versailles, the 70s classic story of love and revolution in that fictional kingdom known as France. Along similar lines is Le Chevalier d'Eon. Night Raid 1931 comes to mind, but tbh the only particularly remarkable about it was there was a minor controversy when it aired since it briefly touches upon some of the bullshit Japan did in Manchuria. Grave of the Fireflies and Rainbow are about the aftermath of WW2. Kids on the Slope is set in 1960s Japan. Backpedaling in time a bit there's Ruroni Kenshin, Sword of the Stranger, and Shigurui Death Frenzy (the last of which, if it isn't clear by the title, is probably one of the most brutal/gruesome anime series in terms of blood and gore so consider that a warning). Getting into more fantastical stuff, there's series like Chrono Crusade or Baccano that's set in 1920s America. Or Mononoke (not to be confused with Princess Mononoke, it's a sequel to the Bakeneko short story in AyakashI: Samurai Horror Stories) which is a horror series with a really really distinct look that's some sort of unholy marriage of more traditional Japanese art (like Okami), jesus christ did a peacock explode in here, and acid.

Now getting into fantasy stuff. Twelve Kingdoms and Record of the Lodoss war are the classics, though I haven't gotten around to watching them yet. Guin Saga was one of the major influences on Berserk, though they aren't very similar (Guin's more high fantasy and extremely pulpy-- also, the anime only covers the first few volumes of a series that exceeded 150 volumes before the author died so don't expect anything resembling closure from it). And Slayers was one of the popular older anime as well. Violinist of Hameln, while I like the manga a lot it's a bit of an acquired taste (with the goofy comic relief between all the tragedy), and the anime changes the tone a lot so it's super serious and angsty all the time--not to mention its infamously low budget. For newer stuff, there's Legend of the Legendary Heroes (which I haven't got around to watching yet) and Claymore. And I'd have to recomend against the Zero no Tsukaima since the anime adaptation is pretty much garbage on every level unfortunately. :(

I could talk a lot more about anime but I thought I should mainly stick to the genres you were requesting recommendations in.

5. to gain an additional entry, simply write a paragraph(or longer if you wish) review of your favourite anime series or anime movie.:

Ghost in the Shell -
many films, a few seasons, many video games. my favorite out them all was the 1995 film (not v2.0). Starts off with a therm-optic camouflage leap of a skyscraper for an assassination. On the trail of the puppet master another great scene was when the major chases a guy down an alley who is wearing a white hoodie (after his therm-optics are destroyed/disabled) and packing an automatic rifle and they end up fighting in the water. The scene where the major is ripping the hatch off a tank manually to gain access was epic. enough explosions, hackers, and bullets flying to keep me entertained and remain in memory for many years.

thanks for the giveaway Tarnicus!

My Favourite Anime is Fist of the North Star
It's about a Martial Arts Master in a apocalyptic world. He wanders the wastelands and takes every opportunity to use his awesome skills to fight evil and protect the helpless. The Martial Arts he uses is about pressing the right points on the opponents body to harm him in many ways: heads explode, spines get broken, and many more.
It's brutal, it's a bit cliche, but it's also 80s and has heart and soul.

I just wanted to say thanks all for the suggestions everyone :) This giveaway should conclude tomorrow depending on how the extraction goes.

I've seen a lot of the suggestions mentioned in this thread - the first anime I ever saw was Akira, closely followed by Fist of the North Star and Ninja Scoll (all 3 of which have been mentioned).

Some of my favourites since, some that have been mentioned in this thread are Rurouni Kenshin(Samurai X as a Western release), Berserk(my all time favourite!), Ergo Proxy, Monster, Basilisk...ah the list goes on! I've had a bit of a break from anime for a few years, so it's great to hear more suggestions for a medium of storytelling that I thoroughly enjoy :)

too bad I'm not much of an anime fan, or he would get another entry..
Or if I say that I kinda liked some episodes of that anime, in which the "powers" in some translations were names of metal bands will grant another one? (I think it was Berserk? the name, not sure...)

Thanks Tarnicus!
