I must confess (with certain embarrasment) I truly enjoy the Saint Seiya series. The whole idea of modern knights with martial skills developed until the point they achieve superpowers, fighting one another for their god/goddess appealed to me at once. While the themes aren't so deep or provocative food for thought as in another animes, there are the classical ones like the value of friendship, overcoming almost insourmontable odds, the pursuit of vengeance (the Phoenix Knight), the refuse to believe that the end justify the means (Athena making her stand each time one of the other gods decides it's time to wipe out the corrupt and disappointing human race)... ;)

I've seen and liked also the movies based on Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Patlabor... (animes with mecha/armored suits are a instant go for me), Akira (I had the opportunity to read the manga before that), Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within... and many more I don't recall right now (my memory is atrocious). :D

My favorite anime series is Death Note. It's not my favorite manga, but it's my favorite anime. I believe the adaptation is awesome, they find the right sound atmosphere and actor voices. I believe this is the only work which is better in anime than in manga (I was a big reader of manga before, in general I didn't like anime adaptation).

I guess anybody need the plot of this series, it was so popular when it was released ! But let's go.

This work tell us the story of Light, a young smart student who found a Death Note. it's the notebook of one Shinigami (the death god) who lost it in Earth. This note have some rules, one of them is if you write the name of an person, he died. You can write how this person died, or keep it blank. In this case the person will have a heart attack. Light want to become a God and kill all thugs, gangsters and scummbag of the world. He always think our world is rubbish, he want to clean it because now he have the power to do. He become Kira, know of everybody. But somewhere exist a man, expert in crime resolution. This man will work with the police with the goal of arrest Kira. The crossover begin !

Trigun is my favorite anime series. It's about a guy who's superhuman (he's not actually human at all) but he has a vow to never kill anyone, even tho there are tons of other people who want to kill him, mostly because of his evil twin. Add in the steampunk/wild west setting, and the great soundtrack (search youtube for "Trigun OST Perfect Night) and you've got yourself a winner .

My favourite Anime is Futurama, does that count? It is animation,right? Anyway, the only other Anime I know is The Simpsons, but I like Futurama better. Not sure if this qualifies, if not I'll have to dig out the name of that japanese pron film I once saw.

For people just starting out with anime I tend to suggest Trigun since it's a great show with comedy and action.
It's easy to watch and fun, and IMO an easy intro to the world of anime. For the more serious people something like Monster might also be good, it shows how anime is not just 'a Japanese cartoon'. I'm always sad when people refuse to watch anime just because they believe that.

One of my favourite anime would be Cowboy Bebop. Great charcaters and amazing soundtrack in a futuristic-western-noir setting.

Another one of my favourites would be Dr. Slump. I can only say it is crazy funny.
