toxicTom: I only regret in a way buying way more games than I will ever be able to play. I don't regret any single purchase though.
And this is why I both love and hate sales lol. I have low resistance during these times. I too have way too many games to play to the end.

As to the games, well I could never get Dark Reign + Expansion to ever work and I really wanted to play that game of old.

The first Twinsen's, I just couldn't get the hang of the controls.

darthspudius: Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines... a fair few on top of that.
Takin' down the big guns. I like it!

But, to answer the op's question... Train Valley. I bought it in a recent sale thinking it looked like
a pleasant enough casual time-killer. By level 5 I had trains flying outta stations and crashing into
each other so fast I never had a chance to keep up. So, that's $2 I'll never see again.

On GOG:
-All The Walking Dead seasons now that I've been screwed out of the final chapter.
-Doom 3 BFG. For some stupid reason I showed support, hoping that Betashed might drop the REAL Doom 3 eventually.
-Assassin's Creed. I hate the original, and it's clear that Ubisoft has no intention of putting any more games from the series on GOG.
-Overclocked. Seriously, this is my most hated purchase on the site, this is easily the most dreary, boring, unengaging, adventure game I've ever tried to play.
-Double Dragon Trilogy. Never, ever trust DotEmu as a developer.

Elsewhere:
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled (Switch). If i'd know the in game grind was a precursor to a microtransaction filled cash shop, or that half the content can't be unlocked offline, OR that the controls were configured solely to suit a Playstation controller, I never would have bought this insult of a release.
Guilty Gear 20th Anniversary (Switch). They nearest neighbor scaled the graphics to 1080p and left it at that, so all the once beautiful pixel art is all misshapen and distorted, it's a travesty. What's worse is this comes after the PC version which, when running in the same resolution is scaled just fine, and also after the Switch port of BlazBlue Centralfiction which has the best PQ of any release.

Those of you who regret purchases, do you research games before you buy them or not? Just trying to find a common denominator.
Wartile - so wanted to like this but something was just 'off'.

Avernum 3: Ruined World - I loved all the previous Spiderweb games and have played them through with much enjoyment. I don't know what it is about this particular game but it was a slog. I've never finished it even though I've reinstalled it a few times hoping my opinion will change. Anyway, I've now given up and doubt I will try again.

Yes, I always research but sometimes no matter how good the reviews or how good the game looks, it just doesn't click.

Of course, but sometimes the information you need just isn't out there (Like Crash Racing slipping a cash shop in AFTER release) and you have to choose to take a gamble. That or something simply appears better to you before you actually get your hands on it. It's not always easy to know how you'll find something when you often can't (legally) play test it before buying.

From games which I have bought Vampire: The Maquerade - Redemption it is too linear game with absolutely terrible AI of my companions. Earth 2140 Trilogy do not know how it is possible, but in one mission computer destroy my base in 30 seconds after start. Beyond Divinity it does not run on my system. Earth 2160 got to one mission where my tanks stop shooting, tried to solve it on forum, but nobody else observe same behaviour (otherwise it would be really good game).

From free games, it is following cases: Fallout Tactics Classic, Carmageddon TDR 2000, System Shock 2, Unreal Gold, MDK, Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition and Beneath a Steel Sky…. on the other hand I would buy some of them, so I am glad, that I could try them for free!

I try to, but reviews are so unreliable and subjective. Anyone can make a game they love/hate sound amazing/shitty.

Having said that, as edited into my original post, the games I regret buying are games I bought early in my uh game-buying career. So i just was just excited to buy anything that had somewhat of a positive overall review.

These days I definitely wait longer for non-sponsored Let's Plays and negative reviews with tons of hours.
Also cause apparently games don't release finished anymore.
e: Somewhat off topic, but I've also learned to be ok with abandoning games instead of trying to get my money's worth aka sunken cost.

Thea : The Awakening

Thought it was an excellent idea for a game, and they certainly nailed the atmosphere. But unfortunately the subpar writing compared to something like Sunless Sea just put me off. This failed to make the world interesting enough for me and I promptly burned out.

kai2: May I ask why you regret the purchases?
Simple really, Deus Ex and Baldur's Gate were mind numbingly boring and Vamp Masq has the worst combat, so bad that it ruined the entire game for me. It sucks.
Deus Ex because I'll never finish my backlog if I restart it everytime someone mentions it oh, goddamnit!

I liked Tales from Monkey Island and the Telltales Sam & Max games, but when playing Back to the Future, I didn't like the direction their games were evolving in (Point & Click adventures -> Cartoons with minimal interactivity).

I'm pretty sure I didn't have to do research on the consecutive games to know that they didn't interest me that much.

Just an example - I usually do plenty of research and haven't regretted many purchases.
Hmmm... buying Fallout 3 before the GotY was released. First paying a lot then even more to get the dlcs. It was not worth that much even I enjoyed the game.
Sure some games were not big hits with me but that is alright if I paid less than €3 for them or recieved as a gift.

kai2: Are there games that you purchased but then wished you hadn't?
Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Omerta: City of Gangsters. And probably some others too.

Not because they are bad games or anything (I haven't yet played either of those two games), but because I bought the base version + some DLCs for it... and a bit later they released a Royal/Gold Edition that includes all the released DLCs. I wish I had waited.

I am missing one one or two DLCs from KC:D, but they cost so much bought separately that it would probably make more sense to buy the Royal Edition on some sale instead, rendering my earlier purchases redundant.

Also in the case of Omerta, I recall they fixed some critical bug only in the Gold Edition, not the base version I had. So even if I have all the DLCs for Omerta, my non-Gold edition is still a worse version of the game. Unless. they have later fixed the bug also in the base version.

At least with The Witcher 3, CDPR released the GOTY edition "for free" for those who had the original version + some of the DLCs...

Ok so basically the same story as with me.

I very rarely, if ever, start playing a new game right after I have purchased it, so in my case it makes more sense to wait until all DLCs are released, and/or they release the GOTY/Gold Edition, or maybe even a remake (unless the remake sucks of course; what a dilemma).

I made an exception with The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, even preordering both games. to support CDPR's and GOG's stance on DRM. At least with TW3 I didn't regret it as I felt CDPR still treated me with respect, later adding the GOTY edition to my account free of charge. That's the way to do it!

Block'Hood, Eschalon 2, Windforge, CivCity Rome, Monster Bash, most of the Bit Trip Series, Locomotion, Warsow*.

The majority of the games there I'd call as "shoddy", as I've outlined in various reviews.

Blockhood is incomplete, Eschalon 2 is dreadfully slow, Windforge was simply incomplete, CivCity has a hard real time requirement, Monster Bash just isn't *good*, a majority of the Bit Trip Games just aren't good, and Locomotion sucks as a followup to Transport Tycoon.

Warsaw was free, but now the servers are offline, so
