What's that coming over the hill?

Iron Harvest is coming soon, DRM-free to GOG.com.
The Great War is over but the giant mechs that took part in it are still roaming the streets of the three dominant European empires. Now a new threat is working secretly to try and spark another conflict, which could throw the continent into chaos. Manage your squads of heroes, soldiers, and badass mechs in sandbox levels full of dynamic RTS objectives that can be tackled in more ways that one.

Check out the game's Kickstarter campaign here.

Djaron: Saw the game page, and the painted static arts and such...

It really sends me strong vibes of the physical boardgame called Scythe !

are there is there any connection between both (people involved in the team or whatever) ?

Oedi: iron harvest and scythe are both based on the same artists work, the '1920+' universe
thank you much

i think the painted artwork for both are gorgeous
While I don't specifically mind GoG advertising a Kickstarter, I wish they had made it more clear that it's what they were doing. Generally when I see an announcement, I assume the game is about to be released, so it sucks to be sitting here thinking "this looks awesome, I can't wait to play it in a few weeks" and then see a Q4 2019 release date on the Kickstarter page.

As for the Kickstarter itself, $45 to get a game key is steep. Their art is amazing and the game looks promising, but that's not much of a deal for a game I won't be able to play for over a year. I backed Battletech on Kickstarter, which is releasing on GoG next month. The game is currently available to pre-order at $40, I Kickstarted it for $15 and am getting a game key. If the game is good, I'll probably end up buying the $50 digital deluxe edition. It's not like I don't have the money to put out, I just think that Kickstarter campaigns should be priced low and people who put the money up to fund these games years before release shouldn't be paying anywhere near full price.
avatar
Matruchus: Well the good news is that the kickstarter already reached 36% of funding till now (on day one) so this will most definitely get funded. The question only is what will all be in the game at the end.
It's around $328,000 of $450,000 now, so looking good, but they need to crack $850,000 to make the skirmish mode stretch goal and $1,000,000 for multiplayer. Without those, it's a one-and-done 20-hour single-player campaign (or two-and-done with the new game plus stretch goal).
What reasons could there be for Win10 exclusivity? I didn't really keep up. Is there some graphics thing that required W10 to use like DirectX?

The only other thing I can imagine would be the use of UWP in the Microsoft store which is completely incompatible with releasing on GOG.
avatar
shmerl: No Linux version listed? I thought they planned it.
The KS page says they'll evaluate Linux / Mac later, so I'm not holding my breath.

This game had a pretty badass trailer a while ago and great concept art, but this pre-alpha gameplay footage is rather bland, to a point where I wonder why they try to promote the game with it.
It looks like a rather bland Dawn of War/ Company of Heroes style game with robots that don't look half as badass as in the teaser trailer.
Sure, they have two more years to make a good game out of it, let's hope they manage.

DirectX 12 is windows 10 only. i have seen some RTS games in recent years that go for dx12 in addition to version 11. if they set 12 as minimum requirement, only windows 10 will work.

@the people who complain about missing win7/8 support: its a new game, i guess a new engine probably based on dx12, why put effort in supporting an older OS and directX version if it looses Microsofts support in january 2020 (win7) anyway. thats 1-2 months after the game is scheduled for release. if they postpone, win7 will officially be dead by release.

regarding windows 8: well, not many people are using it anyway? people who hate new things are still using win7 and progressive people are going for 10 because its way better than 8 and still free via the MS install assistant loophole.

Yeah that would seem to be the most likely reason then though it feels a bit odd for a game that barely looks different from COH/Men of War
In regards to the alleged Windows 10 exclusivity:

"here's a short update to the windows questions. the game should be playable on win 7 and 8, we tested it and it works. But we can give you NO GUARANTEE! Please note that until the end of 2019 a lot can happen :-). Thanks for your understanding."

I figured as much. It's an Unity game after all, and those work on all Windows versions from 7 and upwards.

Still weird that they would advertise it as a Windows 10 only title. With Windows 7 still in the lead as far as OS usage is concerned.

Actually they dont really need to make those 850.000 for the skirmish and multiplayer cause if that doesnt work out they will do that part through publisher funding but they would love to do it themselves free of any restraints from the publishers.

Quote: " What happens if you don’t reach the stretch goal for multiplayer or skirmish?

Our goal for the Kickstarter is to keep total creative control and keep the project between you and us, for as long as possible. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to cut features if we don’t reach the stretch goals.

As you can see in the “Budget” section of the Kickstarter page, we need additional external investments in any case. We talked to multiple publishers last year and all of them want multiplayer, skirmish and so on. So the question is not whether these features will be in the game or not, but who’s going to pay for them and who has a say in how they are implemented.

So, don’t worry. You will get the whole game.

Fortuk: I've searched a bit and it looks like it might be indeed Windows 10 exclusive, for the moment. I'm not too happy about that, so hopefully they'll change their minds.

Reglisse: Yeah,me too ^^
From the Kickstarter page:
"Windows 7

There was confusion (including here in the office) about whether the game will run on Windows 10 only or on other versions of Windows as well. Officially, we use the term “Windows 10” everywhere, because older versions, including Windows 7, are no longer supported by Microsoft and some middle-ware providers, or their support might run out before Iron Harvest is released.

BUT Iron Harvest currently runs just fine on Windows 7 and we don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t do so in the future.

It’s just that Microsoft and others keep talking about not supporting it anymore, so it’s a somewhat uncomfortable position for us as developers. So… it IS a Windows 10 game, but it will most likely run on Windows 7, 8 and others versions as well."

In my case...It's too late...
Good Luck to them but in 2020 I'm going to be a Linux User Only ^__^

Win10 has shown to be very faulty even after several patches. Ask any IT guy and he'll yell you what a chore it is to work with (MS pushing the win.app file format which tends to mess up with third party software) if you do more than just use MS Office and check your e-mail.

Also, most of these "progressive" people got the OS for free or had it forced upon them.

King Art Games did a survey (with 15.000 people) about what kind of an RTS game people would like to have and the results are very interesting. Its the basis of Iron Harvest game.

I attached a picture of what the game is based on.

So if you guys want to check the whole survey you can do that here: https://kingart-games.com/article/20-iron-harvest-rts-survey-results

Its really an interesting read and shows how wrong RTS development was in the last few years turning to MOBA style gameplay.

You mean that corporate suits trying to follow the latest gaming trends actually don't know what people actually like in there video games? Say it isn't so!
