It's the unpatched 1.0.I know. I bought it.
If I could apply the patch myself, it would be no big deal. But you cannot with the GOG version.
now this is a great great game :)
it's definitively an instabuy.
my old disc was scratched a while ago and wouldnt play on my new pc.
well it would but it went way to fast even with slowing the processor down.
So whats the deal with the patch GOG?
This is the only thing making me wait at the moment.
Hmmz , ill buy it anyway :p sicne you guys never failed me before ^^
Not that excited about this release. It's a great game but one which has been re-released a thousand times over and which can easily be bought for next to nothing on eBay in new condition (Sold Out version). I was hoping GOG would stick to harder to find games.

Syme: I love this game! Excellent addition, GOG.
I do have one question: Is the game speed throttled in this release? I recall my last time playing it, even the slowest speed would fly.

I haven't encountered any speed issues; the game runs for me at the same speed it did a long time ago, when it was relatively new.

ambient_orange: is it more addictive than pharaon? :) what are the differences and main features? missions are boring or not?

I couldn't say which one is more addictive. I haven't played that much Pharaoh, but I recall the AI (which guides your citizens) is better in that game.
The assignments are, in my opinion, not boring. Sure, your task is always to reach a certain pop limit and have predetermined ratings, but there is great variety in the landscape, the Emperor's reqests, invading armies, etc.

I'm positively pleased that it's here. Even if it's commonly available, I found it much more convenient to grab it from GOG.
Convenience is a plus, I agree - but I already have 3 copies and I haven't really played it that much :P (the flood of similar games like Zeus, Pharaoh, etc. kinda put me off).
Game has now been patched - Well done GOG
As for the debate on its worth as a game, and the ease to purchase a copy cheaper than here, - my answer is always "then do so" as it is a common market after all.
I think the prospect of Pharoah and Zeus (Pharoah being my fave of the 3) in a collectors set on GOG is mouthwateringly exciting, and sandbox building games were a love of mine back in the day.
Its not for everyone, no game is, but for the people that love this genere this is a piece of history worth getting

It may be easy and cheap to get a retail copy...but is it easy to install/run the game out of the box? I personally prefer GOG sticking to harder to install/run games.

It worked fine for me in Vista when I tested it a few years back + you can get it patched. I see no reason why it wouldn't work on Windows 7 as well.

How does it compare these days as an actual game though?
Important message: According to the game site it has been patched now. Please re-download the installer.
I'm also gonna buy it now. ;-)

Still one of the best city builders around, definitely the best Roman city builder...
