How on Earth did I miss this thread? Anyhow:
The only reason any of you even say anything about Steam is because this is a anon forum and you think you have power, and you think nobody will know you. You wouldn't have the balls to say it in real life. In real life you would hide under the tinfoil hats.
FYI, when I hate certain aspects of Steam, I inform members of Valve staff. It's probably why MikeBlas doesn't like me much. But then, it's also why he thanks me when I inform them of things I do think they did right.
So, just because people post about stuff on a forum; don't assume that they never tell the people who need to hear it.
As for Impulse Phase 3...
I see they still didn't fix their site. And given the quality of the site, I am loath to put their client on my PC. And do they even have forums? I sure as hell couldn't find any. All I could find were mentions of most popular articles and blogs but nothing browseable.
I do however, like the fact that they attempt to show you how much something will cost in local currency (at least on the two product pages I managed to get to load).
In fact, could someone take a print screen of what Impulse's home page is supposed to look like? And could you tell me if they allow gifting?
Wow, Impulse is turning into Steam, what with its in-game overlay (chat in Sins marathons would be very welcome), funny DRM name, and downloading the game anywhere. I like this. I used to hate Impulse yet I was forced to use it to play SOASE, but I think that it's coming along.
About the GOO thing, I don't see any drawbacks if it works as advertised (I haven't had a chance try). It no longer violates the first sale clause, and a one time on-line activation for a game you can then transfer to an off-line gaming machine if you please, doesn't seem like a real problem to me. OK, it eat 5 minutes of your life, but that's still less inconvenient than a CD check. And the fact that authentication can be done by any publisher seems like a reasonably good way to ensure we can still play our games 15 years from now.

Their site. As far as I can tell, it's fully functional. But then, I've been using it since the day it went up without problems.

Yes they have forums. However, the forums are a massively disorganised mess, they're extremely slow, and you'd have to either use the Impulse client or Stardock's site (not the Impulse site) to find them.
They are aware of those problems and have been for a long time. But sorting it out doesn't seem to be a priority right now.

Click the links in this post if you want to see how the various sites look.
Gifting games is simple enough, you just need to fill in the intended recipient's email when you buy the game. Basically, if you can figure out how to do it here, you can figure out how to do it with Impulse too.

Clicking the links doesn't help as the site does not appear to load correctly for me. Which is why I need screen shots to compare. =S
