BadDecissions: I do feel that, on this site of all places, if I want to play an old game, I can play an old game. In that context, buying a new game pretending to be an old game can seem pretty silly to me.
Fully agree with that.

Robette: Especially since both games drew much of their atmosphere from their technical limitations.

Crosmando: Stupidest thing I've read all week. I bet you're one of those "games were only turn-based because of technical limitations" people aren't you.
The iconic fog of Silent Hill is in place because handling the vast environment would have been otherwise troublesome for the PSX and much of the horror of Resident Evil came from the combination of clunky controls and the immovable camera related to the pre-rendered background.

I wouldn't mind more Zelda clones, actually. And I like pixel graphics. They leave more room for imagination.

What is wrong about that estimation?
The fog is the design choice. Of course they couldn't make the bigger areas because of the limitations, but other games don't have bigger areas. So Silent Hill could've been a game with a game inside small rooms.

I don't know anyone who was scared by the fog in SH, btw.

If anything, hardware limitations were making games less scary, because I knew as soon as Im going to change the room, monsters chasing me are going to disappear.

PS. Fixed camera is awesome.

And? Resident Evil didn't have fog, and Silent Hill was fully 3D. They didn't become survival horror games by mistake because of technical limitations, but by how they were designed.

You could claim that the fog of war in Red Alert 1 was designed to keep frame rates stable by not showing any battles going on beyond the player's view, but it would be wrong even if that was a neat side-effect.

Kunovski: you guys are silly... I don't mind if the game looks like a lego brick as long as the gameplay is GREAT - that's how I choose my games.

Crosmando: Yes and I couldn't care less what a girl looks like, as long as she's good in bed.... oh wait
oh man, comparing girls to videogames, that's even sillier :D
The retro graphics don't bother me, AT ALL, it's the lack of originality that can get a tad trying, and that's kind of the point I got from the OP. 8 bit with some CREATIVE gameplay would do wonders; if I find myself in another fucking castle looking for another fucking princess, buying potions from another fucking old man in a cave I'm afraid I may have to shoot myself.

And of course, pre-rendered background is a "technical limitation" and cannot, ever, be a design choice ?
I'm not versed in Silent Hill trivia, but this "technical limitations" mantra makes me want to strangle someone every time I read it.

Well-placed fixed cameras are perhaps the single most important thing that was lost along the way for "survival horror".

I'm pretty sure the Hammerwatch was the trigger for him :)

and I must agree that this game looks so dull I didn't even finish watching the trailer...

but look at Rogue Legacy for instance - it has all the attributes you've mentioned would kill you, yet one can rarely find such a great platformer with a constant "one more try and I'll go to sleep" effect (and I don't like platformers, the last one I enjoyed was Cave Story)
What annoys me more is how "roguelike" has become such a video game buzzword (semi) recently. Seems like anyone will try to sneak the word into a game, even if it's not a roguelike, just for some cred.

so it's a good thing you won't be fooled and can avoid those, isn't it?

It's not good for anyone when words lose meaning, I think.

still it happens all the time I'm afraid...

take "funky", "cool", "hardcore", "friend" or "love"... :D
Indie developers trying to make "Old style" games suck at it because so far I haven't seen a single game which matches the old classics

When was the last time an indie made a game as good as the megaMan games or one of the old contra games?

I've never played Megaman and I didn't like Contra games very much either... well, I liked them, but I was like 10 at the time and there was nothing better to play, so :)

sure, lots of garbage games are released every day now, but from those thousands there are many truly wonderful games... also, you can still play those old classics if that's what makes you happy the most :)
