A Bitmap Blast From the Past!

The Chaos Engine, a legendary top-down shooter straight from 1993 with tweaks and updates such as16-directional movement, is available for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

The infernal machine known as the Chaos Engine reaches through space and time and corrupts our world twisting humans into bloodthirsty, armored beasts. It is up to a small task force of top mercenaries to stop the menace and bring the balance back to the planet. There's only one way to achieve that goal, of course--shoot everything that stands in their path. The heroes of this story are almost as scary as the monsters they fight, but they know quite well that some places are too dangerous to go alone. Cooperation is the key to success--double the firepower, double the chances of survival--and success is crucial to humankind's continues existence.

The Chaos Engine, the legendary top-down shooter originally released by Bitmap Brothers in the magical Amiga era, is back and it's better then ever. This faithful remake brings around everything that made the original great--sleek graphics, badass characters, puzzles, and extreme gun combat. Once again (or maybe for the first time), you can play through all 16 classic levels in four exciting worlds, preferably in exciting multiplayer mode. For an exciting nostalgic trip with tons worth of bullets being shot on the way, you can't go wrong with a classic like The Chaos Engine!

Set out to save the world and kick some monster butt in one of the most memorable Amiga-era games, The Chaos Engine, for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

CORRECTION: We're sorry for the misleading original post, but the game does not support on-line multiplayer.

So far the steam page says it has online co-op. If they don't correct it until release, then it seems the Steam Version si the preferred one if you want to play with friends and not only locally.

As far as I can tell the online multiplayer mode is Steamworks based, and therefore isn't present i our DRM-free edition.

Local co-op still rocks!

Well I don't care for online co-op, but if true it's still depressing as it's yet another game GOG has released with a component pulled out because of Steam matchmaking.

Figured. Guess local does not include direct IP local lan? Because then at least I could make do with Hamachi or something. But local co-op does not much good for me if the one I play with lives around a 1000 km away. :(

Sadly I do, so Steam version during a sale for me.

Three great and awesome releases today. Thanks
I'll swim upstream by mentioning that I never really understood the praise the original game always got. So for me this release is a bit meh, but I guess that's ok. You can't always like everything everyone else likes, and vice versa.

Maybe I'll get it from some sale anyway. And I guess I can live without the Steam online multiplayer, as I am 99.9999999999999999999% sure I won't play it online anyway. I'm only for the single-player games here.

Well, I think it's more an issue of just having an incomplete game on GOG. Of course the problem would be solved if instead of Steamworks the devs bothered to code a TCP/IP system for online co-op. So it does look like a bit of a cash grab if you look at it like this.

Yeah, from GOG's point of view it certainly matters (as lost sales). From my point of view, not.

But if the other option was that GOG wouldn't have sold it at all, I'm happy they opted for releasing a single-player-only version.
I hate being "that guy" as I know it can be annoying in release topics, but this game is a pass for me.

I appreciate this style of gameplay as I loved classics like Smash TV, Total Carnage, ect. However releasing the game here at the same price as steam with not even a LAN mode option feel as a previous post said, a cash grab.

At least Brutal Legend did have a lower base price to make up for the missing feature. This though releasing at full price with no alternate solutions makes it feel like a cheap port to try and get some buys here.

This will be a wait for a future bundle game for me.
you guys probably totally miss the point - this game is great in LOCAL coop, meaning two people smashing keys on the same keyboard...

I can't imagine the fun being even remotely as great when you play with someone you don't see and can't talk to (and laugh/scream/punch each other with)

local coop is all you need for this game, trust me :)
Anyone have any tips for a good gamepad for PC?

I think this game is so fun that it in itself is a reason for me to finally buy a gamepad. :D

I still love my Logitech F310. It handles great both old DirectInput, and new XInput/XBox360, gamepad games.

Thanks! I'll have a look at it. Spending the weekend playing Chaos Engine with a gamepad would be great. :)
Nice Release GOG, and good to include the original version too. Will pick this up later. To the reviewer who is going to play this game instead of Skyrim, play Chaos Engine then throw away Skyrim and get Dragon Dogma instead miles better.
Whoa, the second shmup released on GOG in a year, and one that originated on PC no less. I've heard of Raiden but I never heard of this at all. I consider myself a shmup aficionado so I guess I will have to check this out eventually,.
