A Bitmap Blast From the Past!

The Chaos Engine, a legendary top-down shooter straight from 1993 with tweaks and updates such as16-directional movement, is available for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

The infernal machine known as the Chaos Engine reaches through space and time and corrupts our world twisting humans into bloodthirsty, armored beasts. It is up to a small task force of top mercenaries to stop the menace and bring the balance back to the planet. There's only one way to achieve that goal, of course--shoot everything that stands in their path. The heroes of this story are almost as scary as the monsters they fight, but they know quite well that some places are too dangerous to go alone. Cooperation is the key to success--double the firepower, double the chances of survival--and success is crucial to humankind's continues existence.

The Chaos Engine, the legendary top-down shooter originally released by Bitmap Brothers in the magical Amiga era, is back and it's better then ever. This faithful remake brings around everything that made the original great--sleek graphics, badass characters, puzzles, and extreme gun combat. Once again (or maybe for the first time), you can play through all 16 classic levels in four exciting worlds, preferably in exciting multiplayer mode. For an exciting nostalgic trip with tons worth of bullets being shot on the way, you can't go wrong with a classic like The Chaos Engine!

Set out to save the world and kick some monster butt in one of the most memorable Amiga-era games, The Chaos Engine, for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

CORRECTION: We're sorry for the misleading original post, but the game does not support on-line multiplayer.

Crosmando: Hey, the new Daedalic game comes out today too doesn't it? We gonna get it?
Tomorrow is the official release date.

3rd paragraph second line of the opening post
Well, emphasize "faithful" then. I would rather a "remake" which reuses the original assets and code, and just makes the original playable natively in modern systems without emulation, than some "re-imagining" abomination which takes a dump on the original game and tries to appeal to Call of Duty audience.
cool release! Loved the Original on my snes. Wishlisted!

still, I think it's better to stay with the "free" DOS version for now... (sorry, GOG)

I mean abandonwaring it (and no, I don't want to continue in the upcoming argument :)

because I don't think that taking a game, adding a couple graphical tweaks and selling it for 10 dollars is the right way to do...

Well, the original is still up for sell, for 20 pounds. Make of that what you will...

wow, those crazy collectors on ebay, they're really something :) I should try to sell some of my old boxed games too...

Who said anything about ebay?
Bitmap Brothers page for Chaos Engine.
R-Comp Interactive store page.

Not sure if them being maintained is better than them being relics though...

What argument? Abandonware is only valid when the game is no longer being sold, otherwise it's piracy.

Why not? GOG do the same thing all the time to old games, put them in DOS Box wrappers, or just tweak or fix them for compatibility, and then release them here. This is no difference, except that this time the developers have gone to the trouble of digging up the old Amiga code and porting it to Windows/etc, adding some tweaks etc, which is better than just GOG bundling it with an emulator like usual (which I have no problem with). I think your complaining is hypocritical unless you also complain about every other classic release on GOG.

yeah, those pages look as old as me... :) but point taken
Mastertronic?

Hmm..., interesting.
Don't they have the retail rights of Grand Prix Legends, Richard Burns Rally and a lot of other classics?
So, first impressions.

- The 'visual enhancements' basically boil down to a fuck-ugly emulator-style edge-detect filter and some bloom shaders around the explosions and menu letters. It genuinely looks dreadful - best to switch this off.
- The sound is rather glitchy. The sound of the nodes activating just sounds completely wrong, and you don't always hear when you've picked up coins (meaning that you never quite realise if the coin disappeared from under your feet or whether you actually picked it up).
- The 16-direction control works surprisingly well and is a welcome addition.
- The fade-in animations of the bridges (for example when you collect keys) are missing - they just 'appear'.
- The GOG version has no achievements (I understood there would be an in-game system, as opposed to Steam's own system) and no internet play. This isn't so critical, as there will doubtless be nobody online playing it in a couple of weeks anyway, but still...

Seems like the Linux version is Steam only. I’ll wait then for it getting released separately or in a (Humble-)Bundle.
^^ Same here, waiting to see if a DRM-free linux version comes out. Wishlisted anyway.
