Meanwhile, somewhere in a travel forum, a German couple is posting a thread. "Hi folks, we are currently staying at this nice inn in America. The inn itself is nice and all, except for the inn proprietor who keeps on insisting that we and our children to have ice water, ice cream, cold orange juice, etc. Also, every so often when we are talking to him, trying to have a nice conversation, he would derail it with some weird or pointless off-topic one-line jokes. Is this an American thing or is this person just fucking nuts?"

Just kidding! :-D

Maybe there are some regulations but nobody is enforcing them? I've read this about a party that wants to lift those regulations when they win the election.

no, there are no such regulations.

There are parties who want to lift some of the other regulations around sale of alcohol, so there may just been some confusion with translations. Norwegians are allowed to hold parties on whatever day they want.

So what's the deal about boxing, then? Internet is pretty full of news about boxing ban in Norway. (see my edited post above)

Would you believe that the ban has been in place since 1981?! - lol.

Even wikipedia says so: In some countries, including Norway,[1]Cuba and North Korea[2] professional boxing is banned.

btw. the one you linked is performing in AMATEUR BOXING

There is some issues around boxing, yes. I am not that interested in sports, and have not been following it closely, but I think it is in the lines that it is illegal to hold professional matches. It is not illegal to train professionally, but holding the actual matches are.

Amature boxing matches are legal (my sister does kick boxing, even dips her toes in the Norwegian championships when she can).

To be honest, sports is not my thing :)

Sure, but such a ban is still absurd :P In professional boxing there are no helmets used and Norwegian politicians think it's bad for you so it's banned.

If someone wantys to be punched in the head, he should be able to do it for money as well, don't you think? ;P

btw. why do you have UK in the location?
I made this thread for my own stupid curiosity, I had no idea it would evoke such passion. :P This is the most fascinating forum on the web, hands down.
If you want to see silly laws, you just have to look at the United States of America.

There is a whole book full of peculiar and absurd laws.

@ Topic: I am from Germany and all I can say is... COLD FOOD IS EEEEVIL!
No, seriously, they are just nuts...

It is where I live and work at the moment. My better half is English, and I have been living here the past 6 years.

For boxing... I do not see why the professional boxers should not also use helmets, but yes it is their choice. The can clobber themselves senselessly as much as they want... I still think it is a silly thing. My sister does kickboxing mainly for the exercise, and the rest is just for fun.

tinyE: Totally stupid thread but I can't get this out of my head and I don't know anyone else I can ask about this.

I have a German couple staying at my inn tonight and they don't allow their children to consume anything cold because they believe it's bad for the body.

Is this a German thing or are these people just fucking nuts?
Neither nore. There is a bit of a common believe here that cooled beverages aren't as good for the infant digestion then room temperatured things. But it's only a small minority and certainly it doesn't hurt. There might even be something to it, you might get a little less often stomach ache. So not really nuts either, just a bit peculiar.
Nothing German only personal believe.
How hot is it at your place? If you drink something cold the body
starts to warm this....using calories and ending up that the body sweats.
That means he is losing water and you gets even more thirsty than before.
Ice or real cold drinks can get you cramps too (more often if you are a child).

It might have something to do with the notion that drinking ice water will cause cancer. It is a nuts notions, but not confined to Germany.

Snopes: Cold Comfort

So that's how I got it! It sounds better than the guy who suggested it was from smoking. I had testicular cancer; I asked him how the hell did he think I inhaled?

That actually kind of sound like it might have some logic to it. These kids are five and six respectively though, then again I'm not a doctor.

keeveek: to sell alcohol on elections day
avatar
amok: This is wrong
It's not quite true, but saying that it's wrong is an oversimplification. Grocery stores are indeed not allowed to sell alcohol on election day, and I belive (although I'm not certain, as it's never been relevant to me) that pubs and bars are not allowed to seel alcohol until the polls close.
