Totally stupid thread but I can't get this out of my head and I don't know anyone else I can ask about this.

I have a German couple staying at my inn tonight and they don't allow their children to consume anything cold because they believe it's bad for the body.

Is this a German thing or are these people just fucking nuts?
As in food going cold? It generally isn't accepted here, but that's mainly due to the bad taste.

No, I mean as in nothing chilled or with ice. No ice water, no ice cream. They said they can have orange juice tomorrow but it needs to me room temperature.

It would be hilarious if the German couple were GOG users, browsing the forum right now. :P

They are nuts. I've spent most of my life there and I haven't ever observed this kind of behaviour.

Not sure about the others but for ice cream, maybe it's an excuse to not get them ice cream, I dunno? Parents sometimes made up crap excuses so they don't have to get their child something :P

Must be hippies!
Send in the Licurg! -_+
Turn up the AC so that the room is as cold as possible. Then tomorrow when you give the guests cold orange juice they'll say, "We asked for room temperature juice."

You'll respond, "It is room temperature!"

(I am lame.)

I'm not the ultimate authority on all things German, but I've never heard of this. It's certainly not something which the German community in the US believes in and I've never heard of that from any Germans I've met.

So, I'm guessing that they're either completely nuts or just trying to prevent their children from eating too many sweets.

We don't need to do that. I'm perfectly capable of hating and mocking hippies without him.

i am german, and i can assure you, it is not a "german thing", it is a "nuts thing"
My sister-in-law doesn't drink anything chilled or cold whatsoever. It's a personal preference, it seems.
You sure they are Germans and not Austrians? (No not Australians, I mean Austria! :-p )

Anyway, of course COLD is bad, try drinking liquid oxygen and see how bad that is for you.

Other than that, I just googled a bit on German pseudo health forums and there are indeed some myths going around about cold drinks.
But considering that I've been told that a considerable part of America believes that Pizza is a vegetable I might suggest some nutty American people think that cold drinks are the devils work, too. /Sarcasm

Which is kinda nuts considering the importance of beer in German culture. If anything I'd expect Germans to praise cold food and drinks. :P
You run an inn, hey? These people are nuts. My fridge has been broken for like a month and my mental state has deteriorated significantly because of all the warm drinks and ever-curdling milk.

Oh is it that classical stereotyping season already?
Well, anyway, those health-issued vegan treehuggers are creeping out of their woodwork everywhere. So it's rather obvious they form some health forums and spam their health related questions there. Each to his own I suppose.
