I've lived in Germany and I've never encountered this there. Germans eat Ice Cream...
I thought most Europeans liked their beer room temperature? Of course, we all know Europeans are crazy.
I wonder if I can stay at tinyE's inn for stars instead of cash?

There is no such thing as "most Europeans do/say/like X". Most Europeans have very little in common. Europe consists of 50 separate countries, each with a history and culture that goes back more than a thousand years, some way more than that.

tinyE: Is this a German thing or are these people just fucking nuts?
It's a nuts thing. You're not allergic are you?

Well, I've heard there are people who get an upset stomach for consuming something chilled.

You think that's nuts? I just read that in Norway it's illegal to pour double drinks in clubs, to own a reptile, to train professional boxing, to sell liquorice, to play poker, to sell alcohol on elections day ant to organise a party on a national holidays.

this is NUTS.
Some people don't take ice (cubes) in their drinks or eat ice cream when abroad because they are afraid it could but contaminated in some way (the cubes not made from drinking water, the ice cream not constantly chilled), but taht wouldn't explain the room temperature orange juice...
Maybe to do with hot and cold things being bad for your teeth:)

Fuck yeah! I think we have more ice cream parlors here per square mile than in any other country in Europe (excluding Italy possibly). Even my home town, with a grand population of 10,000, has three of them.

Also - beer that is not sufficiently chilled is a grave sin punishable by death.
There is indeed the myth that it's easier for the body to handle stuff that is not too cold. I believe the idea behind it that the body needs more energy to warm it up again while digestion. But that is, what a surprise, not a german thing.

Sometimes you can get also little stomachache or headaches by drinking too much cold drinks or ice too fast, so I wouldnt' be surprised if some peoples stomachs reacts more sensible. Maybe the kid had some problems with digestion (I remember having a congestion on my last USA holiday by eating all that fat food from the diners) and the parents here are a little overprotective, but we rightly don't know any details and so shouldn't judge.

We do have some strange alcohol laws, but this is wrong

avatar
keeveek: to own a reptile,
All exotic pets industry is heavily regulated. it is not illegal to own a reptile, but difficult to get legally

avatar
keeveek: to train professional boxing
This is wrong, and we have had a few good boxers, like Ole Klementsen

avatar
keeveek: to sell liquorice
This is just plain wrong. liquorice is my favorite sweet :)

avatar
keeveek: to play poker
Gambling is illegal, playing poker is not as long as money is not involved

This is wrong

So maybe they're refugees who came to the US to protect their kid from this totalitarian "cold food" environment? ;)

I'm sure, they are just overprotective parents; has nothing to do with nationality.

LOL yes, they traveled for many moons, First on a covered wagon, from a small village in Baden-Württemberg to Nantes, a French city near the sea. Then they got themselves a small boat and sailed across the Atlantic ocean to America. The journey was dangerous. A storm almost sank the ship but god was on their side. They reached the shores of America, some months later. Finally, they were free from Germany's ice cream parlors and cold beer, in the land of Mcdonalds and Burger King.
