I honestly don't see the difference between that system and D&D aside from the realtime thing.
You gain experience, you level up your character, you improve your skills which makes you more effective in combat, conversation and puzzle solving.
From my perspective, the main difference between that & a generic fantasy rpg is that instead of hovering a cursor over a monster, clicking once to attack and then waiting to see what the outcome is, you have to hover a mouse cursor (or equivelent controller input) over an enemy, keep clicking the mouse button to shoot whilst moving the character with the keyboard (or equivelent controller inputs). As long as everything is determined by background dice rolls then its an RPG to me.
