Word is that it's due to come out in "spring" 2012. I presume this is freaky northern hemisphere spring so it's likely to be April/May or so

There's a video that has both background and a bit of gameplay footage at the end

Not sure if you can only look at that link once but it wasn't working for me when I tested it, this is the normal version of the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNpfL1XdHpE

I'm desperately hoping this game can live up to my expectations. I've been a fan of the Alien franchise since I was eight years old and first watched Ellen Ripley kick Xenomorph ass. I feel after borderlands that Gearbox has the ability to make a competent shooter, but the most important thing will be to nail the atmosphere of the films. That's always the tricky part, capturing the quiet dread, sound is suck a huge part of the Alien universe. I felt like Dead Space actually hit similar notes. Listening for the rattling sound of vent crawling Necromorphs gave me simliar chills as watching the original Alien movie. I'm hoping for a bit of that with Colonial Marines.
Never been excited for a Gearbox game. But I did really enjoy Borderlands.
And I'm a gigantic fan of Alien.

So I'm debating my excitement level.
After the single player experience of the last AVP I would appreciate this game. The suspense was only there for the first level and after that it was just another swarm shooter. If they get this right it will be a true horror/survival/shooter which hasn't been done well for a while except for Dead Space (from what I've heard).

Opposing Force was good

You and I are in disagreement.

Dead Space is terrific. I played through it on 360 on a Hi-Def screen with every light in the house off and was completely freaked out. I highly recommend it.
I agree with Taleroth.
Then again, I've been waiting for this game for some time now...

I had the complete opposite reaction. By the time I hadn't even finished the first level I saw that I was going to be pretty well armed throughout, and it's easy to spot exactly where the baddies are going to come from, even when it's supposed to be a surprise.

The first AvP POV game, on the other hand, is the most awesome horror survival ever. That you can play without becoming traumatized, because that title goes to Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Ok, I am a HUGE Alien fan. I even have the very hard to get Colonial Marines Technical Manual sitting on my bookshelf and I've read the entire thing, cover to cover, more times than I can imagine. I've seen Aliens more times than any other movie. Needless to say I'm really looking forward to this game, and will likely enjoy it a great deal when it comes out, but some things are nagging me.

SPOILERS for those who haven't seen the movie or the trailer, read at your own risk.

OK, so, we clearly see a video feed from Hadley's Hope. Theres just no way thats possible. Hadley's Hope was only home to roughly 300 people, and the shots we see in the movie and other sources put it as a very small community. The Atmospheric Processor was practically next to the colony. There is just no possible way ANY of Hadley's Hope survived a thermonuclear detonation of that magnitude. Even if it did, theres no way any video feed would be working. If we go off of the tech manual, the derelict ship would have survived the explosion however, which makes it plausible that if anybody went down to salvage anything from the colony or the Sulaco, there is a chance they became infected.

Next, this is iffy given the fact we know little about how they actually work, but would the air on LV-426 still be breathable after the detonation? I'm assuming they are going off of the assumption that there is still some breathable air left before the entire planet reverts back to its initial atmospheric conditions.

Very unlikely that Bishop's legs would be found, they would have been blown out the airlock. Still, some chance that maybe they got stuck behind something.

No mention of the events of Alien 3 yet and that has me wondering a bit. The Weyland-Yutani knew exactly where the EEV was, and where it crash landed. The Marines should have the same ability to track it. This makes me wonder if we are going to see Fury 161 in the game at some point.
The trailer looks awesome and I hope it doesn't come to STEAM.
Meh. Terribad voice acting and the bad script are indicators of how poor the story and writing is likely to be. But actual gameplay might be good.

I'm sad that after so many years, not a single party-based tactical game utilised this license*. What I wouldn't give for a turn-based RPG/squad sim hybrid. Try this flash board game, for instance:

Makes you imagine the possibilities...

*: I'm aware of Obsidian's cancelled project. I don't believe it would be any good, however. In fact, I have reasons to believe it would turn out quite very poorly. Still, it would be interesting to see it.

Probably sad news to you but...

If the game is by sega or 2k, both ways it will be using Steamworks, probably.

That is just really disappointing because STEAM has issues with the client and the storefront because

1. The client is really buggy when I put in my shortcuts through STEAM itself and deletes it on purpose.
2. STEAM and the games at the storefront is being deleted so european customers won't be able to buy it and the newly released game doesn't even come out on the exact date on european release.

Steam deleting icons? Maybe it's a specific problem between your system and the steam client.

Yeah I know the pain of having games restricted to purchase, that's because the publishers want you to pay more for their games, for a copy at retail. So they have different prices for different regions.

If you're in the UK, they'll usually release there. I guess the bigger problem is if you're in continental EU.
