Sabin_Stargem: It is because GOG is very...spotty, that I no longer recommend their store to developers or customers. I think someplace like Itch is better, since there aren't gatekeepers to prevent a developer from releasing their game. While not strictly dedicated to DRM-free, I have the impression that most developers on the platform don't opt for that. To me, Itch simply feels more "open" than GOG.

LiquidOxygen80: Yeah, but itch is the total opposite of that spectrum, and there's a looooooot of absolute spam and trash to weed through, along with hundreds of throwaways, every time there's a gamejam somewhere. That said, there IS a lot of demos, so if they happen to have something more mainline, or there's a promising game out there, you may be able to find more rough gems there. Otherwise, I don't really recommend itch, unless you're looking for games that have absolutely no other avenues.
Exactly. It's almost as bad as gamejolt.

1. Gamejolt is basically itch, but with a bent towards studios that had their start during the flash game boom, I'm not even sure how relevant they are anymore, because I haven't logged in in at least a year. I DID find some decent indie strategy games, if you don't mind archaic art/graphic design.

2. Bingo. That's exactly what a game jam is, and itch clogs their new release category with almost ALL of them.

tbh, i think tis is more for programmers. But, indeed, they tend to be precisely what leads to itch's clutter issues. Sites like itch, and even gog and steam, need ways to reject certain categories and games. Maybe i don't like paradox and would like to find all games without dlc or something?

Canuck_Cat: They currently have a job posting for a termporarily remote California-based bizdev manager here. From this, we can extract better speculation clues from that and their careers page.
Of course, what they do at any one time is subject to change and perhaps listening to criticism and taking real world results into consideration. And culture can take a while to change ... nothing like a dose of reality to further that.

avatar
Canuck_Cat: It's possible GOG still places emphasis on traditional in-person business culture. Tax regulations don't seem to be a factor as previously suspected in other threads since they're willing to temporarily hire American-based talent. So you can narrow it down to company culture and possibly benefits reasoning.
Maybe they learnt that the hard way.

avatar
Canuck_Cat: Affecting CDPR significantly, yes. But I don't think so for GOG side except for CP2077 refunds from December 2020 - March 2021. CDPR and GOG are sister companies, but I believe they operate largely independently unless when they're forced to work together from a higher up.
I don't doubt they are normally independent, but GOG was quite stagnant in the last few months before CP2077 was released. So one could speculate about that. Might be something as simple as GOG staff helping out as the deadline loomed, especially based o the skills some might have ... or even if it was just in a testing capacity. Then the costs of employment may have been diverted to propping up CDPR rather than GOG for a while. Or maybe GOG have a minimal staff, that is helped out regularly by CDPR employees (some bonus or overtime pay), but that dropped off because work on CP2077 became too demanding.

All conjecture and speculation of course.
But things clearly weren't right with GOG for a few months near the end of 2020, as many postings in the forum show.

avatar
Canuck_Cat: This can be semi-verified. They're hiring now, so that eliminates your suspicion of keeping employment low. You can view archives of their career postings here. Postings change periodically.
Not a suspicion so much as a possibility if you want to speculate.

I highly recommend watching Noclip's documentary on GOG (and the rest of the series, which covers the rest of CD Projekt). It shows that there are a lot of issues and complexities that sometimes make it difficult to get certain games on here.

Even when the devs of a game are begging gog to take it?

Take No Clip with a pinch of salt, it's part promo, part info part 'everything is perfect'

good production of course though!

So, question. Are you under any sort of NDA in regards to your former position? Because I would say you'd be in one of the more unique categories of people who could actually shed some light on the inner workings, especially since Judas doesn't really hang out anymore.

I have no idea what could and could not be said other than I wanted to run a project that outlined the process to the public but alas many concepts lost in a sea of waves.

But I will say that there's no ill intent behind rejections

Cadaver747: About the need to work directly from Poland? I've seen couple of those plus some job offers. And I agree, GOG should be quite famous in Poland with many people eager to join the team.
Okay. But hypothetically, let's imagine I'm a German.

And you're asking me to not only juggle proficiency in three languages, (German, English and obviously Polish), but to also move (Upwards of 300 km) to a country with an inferior social support system, far less freedoms, and leadership that could at best be described as problematic...over enjoying life and wages in Germany.

How exactly do I tell someone to "Go jump though the eye of a needle into a particularly unpleasant lake", in either tongue?

No one is in charge here!

It is a total anarchy! A game vetting anarchy!!! Only the strongest will survive!
