Let's turn the page.

Visual Novels have arrived on GOG.com! Our first selection includes acclaimed games, revered for their intricate artwork and stimulating stories, up to 66% off until May 29, 1pm UTC.

Higurashi When They Cry Chapters 1-5 (25% off): Spawning a popular anime and manga series, Higurashi is a "sound novel", where meticulously designed audio plays a crucial part in these unique stories. Chapters 1-5 are available today, with Chapter 6 slated for release in the near future.

fault (50% off): Sometimes it takes a healthy dose of pulp sci-fi and a dash of fantasy to weave a powerful cinematic story about the human condition. These two episodes of the ongoing series star the perky princess Selphine and her sarcastic guardian Ritona, as they desperately try to make their way back to their homeland.

Sunrider series (66% off): An alternate universe, intergalactic strife, mech combat, high school, and love all around. Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius (free!), Liberation Day, and Sunrider Academy are a beloved and unique mix of strategy, romance, and visual novel. De-censor patch optional, but come on.

eden* (66% off): Stock up on tissues. This critically-acclaimed love story on a dying planet is a real tear-jerker told with stunning cinematic flair. Humanity is about to be wiped out by a red star but this story is destined to stick around for much longer.
Not sure if serious about complains on VNs and "low quality gog".

If it was the case, I thought that "gog dropped the key" years ago, when Bethesda came here, for instance, because their games are
- "Open-air Dungeon Crawlers", yeah yeah, walking simulators, I get it. Barely "games" on certain standards
- there are de-censor patches somewhere, and don't try to pretend to be suprised, if TES are popular, there's a reason...
- they even introduced bad DLC (do you remember horse armour?)

But hey, standards.

P.S.: I am going back to play King of Dragon Pass, a game... oh isn't it a VN too on certain standards? Hum.

Lucumo: In contrast, X-Change and the like was like seven years earlier and that is usually seen as a "classic" in the English-speaking community.
I played X-Change ages ago and i didn't like that weird gender bender crap. Didn't know it's considered to be a classic. :D

But tastes are different and i guess it all comes down to the old saying - one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Nevertheless i appreciate the wide variety of themes in VNs and it would be good to have X-Change available at GOG.

ZaineH: But the Paradox sale... I just... Alright. I did swear that if Higurashi ever showed up, I'd instabuy it. I hope there isn't much of a delay between the Steam and GOG releases for the last three chapters.
avatar
liamphoenix: How did the Paradox sale get you?

It's not like they've actually been adding many games here for quite a while.

I've pretty much stopped playing almost all Paradox games because they tend to be Steam exclusives now and I'm not putting up with that from them to play Stellaris or a newer version of Europa Universalis.
He might be referring to the Paradox Plaza sale that's going on at the moment?

Well, it's not like the non-Japanese community has much to choose from when it comes to VNs that got released long ago. There is obviously the non-ero stuff like Snatcher but also the 18+ material, like X-Change, Desire, May Club etc.

Like you said, it's not good, especially these days. I would rather have someone translate the Sakura Taisen series and release it (here).

Minuteworld: apperantly eden's a censored version of the game and I bought it without realising that and now am pissed. could someone tell me how to uncensor it? apperantley the expansion is missing too? could someone tell me how to get that too? I'll wait a few days to see if gog resolve this (probably not) but I would appreciate it regardless.
Eden* hasn't been censored. The version sold on Steam and GOG is the original all ages version. There is a PLUS+MOSAIC version that added blood and some erotic scenes which was released after the original version.

Theseekingseer: Please bring Moékuri and other Visual Novel RPG hybrid from Mangagamer!
avatar
pmcollectorboy: Moekuri is more of a cute Final Fantasy Tactics clone than a VN.
Does the version of Moékuri sold on MangaGamer have DRM? Is that what the "3rd Party" tag means over there?
I never played this kind of game, but I am surely happy to see a new genre making its appearance on GOG.
I bought some of them, will try them out.
As one of these Indie visual novel devs publishing under MangaGamer I look forward to the day when I might also see my games on the site whilst I don't have those gameplay like features at the moment I have made gameplay orientated titles also. I might be a vn dev now but I come from a background of all sorts of games. Some are doing it to make visual novels for life but I look forward to blending visual novel elements with gameplay especially with point and clicks being among my favourite games.

lostwolfe: oh boy.

gog. stumbling from one controversy to the next.

public profiles? check.
taking a week to solve that issue? check. [and then doing the barest minimum while they were there.]
suggestive vn's? check. [after years and years of "curating" them away.]

i like adventure games. and i love stories in my games.
but when the game is basically just an excuse to have suggestive images on screen...
...hard pass.

i know, i know. you're all going to downvote me. that's totally ok.

[added in much later: aayyyyy. i was right. downvote train incoming. lol. you guys are hilariously predictable.]

bigbossbalrog: People who bitch about being downvoted are hilariously silly. There's plenty of all age VN"s.

Most looking forward to Sono Hanabira!
all ages.

those thumbnails from the videos on gog's news page.

my work here is done.

i mean, just look at them. look at the people in the pictures. look at the suggestive poses they're in. look at the outfits they're wearing. you can't seriously tell me - just from a casual glance at those still images that they're NOT trying to sell based on "sex appeal." they absolutely are. there is /absolutely/ an argument to be made for "all ages" visual novels. and as i said in my original post - which you quoted verbatim - i have no problem with visual novels per se. i am COMPLETELY on board the to the moon train. to the moon is essentially a vn with very occasional bits of interactivity. i am on board with 80 days, which is basically a RIDICULOUSLY stylish and pleasantly well-written vn with path-choices. i am on board with "a mind forever voyaging" which is - basically the world's first walking simulator. i LOVE good stories in games. but again. just looking at these still images from the news page there's...no real way to misconstrue what they're trying to do: sell to you based on your hormonal reaction to those images.

It's not uncommon for really popular porn visual novels to be cleaned up enough for general release, it's generally pretty obvious when this has happened (Fate Stay/Night , Tears to Tiara, etc). The desire to recoup some of the translation costs / increase profit has led to a bunch of porn visual novels on Steam with the adult content removed with varying degrees of skill too.

I only see one video thumbnail from the promotion that seems erotic. The rest is fairly tame tbh. You might as well blame witcher series for trying to fap bait based on having adult themes. What you're saying is ultimately just more "eww anime" double standards. GTA can have bikini-touting perfect bodied ladies all over their promotional art, case and loading screens but woop, one anime bitch and it's a fap bait game. Get over it.

don't worry.

i found fault with that advertising campaign, also and found it equally distasteful.

I really don't know what you mean. Maybe you should let off some... pressure.. if you see eroticism everywhere ;-)

Now honestly: The cover of StarWolves 2 (yuck! nipples!) ist more sexy than those... or Hyperdimension Neptunia...

It would be silly to buy a game just for that. Simply enter <name of game> HCG into the search engine of your choice...

hcg?

i think you and i are seeing very different things in those images.

i am seeing a collection of thumbnails where [for the most part] the creator of the videos went out of their way to find the "cutest" girls they could in those games and then put them into awkward-ish positions.

you're not necessarily seeing that. but to me, it's there and it's clear what's going on.

that star wolves cover is fantastically awkward. would not buy.

i guess i should put it another way: i am against objectification. everything i've seen in those thumbnails is more-or-less about objectifying people.

i am not against adult themes in games [again, see my previous posts, here for games that i feel tackle adult subject matter - like death and dying and politics in an interesting way.] - but those still images skate right over the line for me.
