Let's turn the page.

Visual Novels have arrived on GOG.com! Our first selection includes acclaimed games, revered for their intricate artwork and stimulating stories, up to 66% off until May 29, 1pm UTC.

Higurashi When They Cry Chapters 1-5 (25% off): Spawning a popular anime and manga series, Higurashi is a "sound novel", where meticulously designed audio plays a crucial part in these unique stories. Chapters 1-5 are available today, with Chapter 6 slated for release in the near future.

fault (50% off): Sometimes it takes a healthy dose of pulp sci-fi and a dash of fantasy to weave a powerful cinematic story about the human condition. These two episodes of the ongoing series star the perky princess Selphine and her sarcastic guardian Ritona, as they desperately try to make their way back to their homeland.

Sunrider series (66% off): An alternate universe, intergalactic strife, mech combat, high school, and love all around. Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius (free!), Liberation Day, and Sunrider Academy are a beloved and unique mix of strategy, romance, and visual novel. De-censor patch optional, but come on.

eden* (66% off): Stock up on tissues. This critically-acclaimed love story on a dying planet is a real tear-jerker told with stunning cinematic flair. Humanity is about to be wiped out by a red star but this story is destined to stick around for much longer.

It's always nice to to see you deceeding expectations gog, now peddling child porn, are there any lows you can't limbo under?
Nice move, if now i could only see gog keys in humble, even as an option. and export achievements to astats or completionist i'll prolly completely switch to gog, it beats steam in every other aspect.

Anyway, just like i prefer it for old games i'll be prefering it for vns and eroge as well from now on.

Trid: So, with one is good/best?
Out of the stuff currently available at GoG, I would suggest eden*. Higurashi series is also great, but it's very long if you add all episodes.

Just be aware that eden* is a "kinetic novel", a story without any branching or gameplay. So it is basically a book with illustrations and music. Btw, Higurashi is also a kinetic novel.

If you want something with gameplay, rather than a pure story, then you should look at the Sunrider series. But I'm not too familiar with it and can't give you the details.
I just want to say that this thread has been very entertaining.

Desmight: The only thing I fear is the lack of curation. If that's gonna be the case, then we'll end up having hundreds of anime shovelware games here too. And after today, it's clear that GOG's curation system is becoming too much flexible for my taste.
I would love to see more games on GOG. They declined so many games, I want to see them sell more games. Why not let all games become DRM free? Wouldn't that be cool? Isn't that what lots of GOG users want? Let the consumer decide what they want to buy. Some games might sell more copies, sure, but it would be nice to have a place where everyone was catered to that sold DRM free games, at least I think so! :)

Carradice: About opinions, not really. In a free speech land and medium, everyone has a right to express an opinion, or any statement. That does not make all opinions or statements of equal value, and that is why we used to have news sources, books and experts.

But hey, this is just an opinion ;-)
Yes, every opinion is of equal value. Only someone that's arrogant would think their opinion is valued more than another. Experts can be wrong, news can be wrong, sources are often invalid. Thinking your opinions are more valuable lead to things like genocide. But that's just my opinion :).

Comparing anime to child porn and whatnot, this thread is pure gold! :`D

You know, I could post some actual child porn to compare the anime to, and we'd clear up the debate right here and now. :P

AND TO ANYONE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT WHO MIGHT BE READING THIS, I DO NOT HAVE ANY CHILD PORN! I'M JOKING! I don't even eat at Subway!
It looks like these are selling well, since they've broken into the top 100 of the "Popular" list.

And I thought members here would be above that nonsence, and act like adults. Guess for some I was wrong.
Kinetic is related to motion, so why the hell a VN with more gameplay and interactivity is called non-kinetic? O_o

While I'm really, really happy that GOG is finally letting Visual Novels into their catalogue, I'm rather saddened by the prejudice against the genre that I see in the comments here.

Far from all Visual Novels are excuses for porn. Yes, they usually revolve around romance, but just like with every other game genre, Visual Novels can be perfectly PG and deeply story-driven. I suggest checking out the excellent "Hustle Cat" or "Cinders" as examples.

Visual Novels can - and often do - contain gameplay. Those that don't are a separate sub-genre called kinetic novels. "Dandelion" and "Backstage Pass" come to mind as examples of VNs with gameplay mechanics.

I absolutely understand that VNs can be unappealing to some people, especially if one isn't a fan of anime visuals. But there is no need to just discard them as "garbage". I personally don't see the appeal of FPS's, but I won't call an entire genre garbage just because I happen to dislike it. A lot of people enjoy them - to each their own. :)

Considering most people who spout this debunked baloney are getting buried in terms of dislikes/minuses while people who are in favor of GoG for doing this are getting high-rated, I'd say its pretty easy to see where the gog community stands.
They're expressing their opinions but they're a vocal and (apparently) disliked minority here.
I am not trying to be abrasive here, but can someone please explain the appear of visual novels to me? I mean aside from the softcore porn.

If it's the story you want, you don't need to "play" the game, just watch a YouTube video. It's the same as with those walking simulators, instead of spending all the time walking through what is effectively empty space you might as well just watch a video that skips right to the story parts and get through the story much faster.

It's not that I'm opposed to reading or having stories in games. One of my favourite series is Fire Emblem, which is full of still images and textboxes, but in Fire Emblem that's just the flavouring on the top, the real meat is an actual turn-based strategy game.

Thats why I was very careful to make sure I put in for some. As most people here are very much behind it, its only been a few. Which we are all thankful to those people for making it alot less toxic than the Steam forums, and for welcoming these developers with open arms even if you don't like their games.

You could say that for any game. Why play Skyrim? Just watch it on YouTube. In fact why buy any game, why don't we all just watch them all on YouTube...wait I know its cause maybe its not the same and people actually like do play through and do things for themselves?

Probably because you just move forward (read the story) without getting interrupted by gameplay or choices/branching. But this is just my assumption, I'm not sure what was the original reasoning behind it.
