I have 580 games on GOG. I never had any problem (except with Gog Galaxy which is a whole other story). WIN10, on the other hand, is famous for messing up with old games. There is only so much GOG can do about that.

Turning "Legacy Components" ON solves most of the problems with win10. Click here for a video about how to do it.

tinyE: I have 10 and apart from the constant updates (which can been rescheduled) haven't had a problem.

JackBurton.: Well i have a friend hes biching all the time about 10 and advise me to not to upgrade....so im gnna stick with 7 till i can...but then again every PC has its own story i gues
Funny thing that. Windows 10 is by far the best version of Windows I've use myself. And I've used Windows since 3.11. It is stable and fast and I can see MS going only downwards from here.
Look on PCGamingWiki too, there is a lot of info for configuration and fixing known problems.

That's not necessarily true. There are an endless possibility of hardware combinations. Neither GOG, nor any other store, nor any developer, can guarantee that their software will work properly on all of them. Neither can hardware manufacturers guarantee that their parts will work properly with all software.

The kind of stuff you are talking about in the OP is, always has been, and always will be one of the inherent flaws that goes along with gaming on a computer.

Anyway, your problem could potentially be caused by any out of a number of things, such as:

A) Defective hardware in your computer
B) Hardware that is incompatible with the games you are trying to run
C) Your OS has become corrupted
D) The games are configured incorrectly for your particular hardware and/or OS
E) Your hardware drivers are not installed properly and/or have become corrupted

Trying to sort through those kinds of issues on a forum is not so easy. You should probably contact GOG tech support about your problems.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I appreciate you trying to help out. Long story short, after trying out as many of your suggestions as I can, I'm still having problems. I'll answer some of your individual posts in order of when they were said.

liamphoenix, I should've checked the fine print, but I was stupid enough not to. I check each game that I have problems with, and Dark Forces 2 was the only one that stated that I could encounter problems on Windows 10. That's because an outside source occasionally updates it and GOG can't guarantee they did it well. The rest said they should work on Windows 10

blotunga, thanks for the suggestion, but I have actually asked each of the forums and have yet to get any responses. I just sent GOG a support ticket, so hopefully they can figure it out.

teceem, I tried following his instructions, but it still didn't work for some reason. I sent him the details of what I experienced and I hope he can figure it out. Also, I use the onboard chip. I didn't do anything to the hardware of this computer after I bought it.

RWarehall, I don't know how to check for those. I found files on DirectX on my computer, but it didn't specify which model it was. Though, I'd be surprised if I have anything really old on this Windows 10

misteryo, I downloaded Galaxy, but I've never opened it. I downloaded the games from my collection in the GOG website (I guess that's what you mean by manually)

Greywolf234, troubleshoot has never worked for me haha. Tried it again, and sure enough, it didn't help. Thanks anyways!

Engerek01, I followed the instructions, but strangely enough, Legacy Components was already ON... funny

ariaspi, thanks for the tip. When I have more time, I might check more from it. From a quick look, I've seen a lot of tips that I've already seen. But I'll look more later.

Ancient-Red-Dragon, you're probably right, I should give GOG some slack. I never gamed much on computers, so I never knew that Windows 10 was so infamous. As per your suggestion, I sent them an email and should get a response between 12-24 hours.

A lot of these of these old games require older specific runtimes. I can't exactly link them (because a scammer and a few loser forum regulars seem to like downvoting all my posts) but try these...

www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

You may need to download a few of the C++ ones.

I recently got a new computer and a lot of games wouldn't play until I installed the right packages even though the same games had worked on my old computer with Win 10.

Jedi_Mercenary: ... Or is GOG worse than all the rumors? ...
yes it definitely is! gog/cdproject managed to lower itself over the years from a bright drm-free star in the gaming industry that cared about its customers and had working games! now its just a scam-site, selling overpriced, broken, unfixed, abandoned, censored and malware infested shit. support doesn't give a shit also. thats all the magic of greedy pathetic shareholders, f*ck them! if you bought here something recently, then try to get your money back somehow. like a cc chargeback and just don't buy here again! thats the only way to sanction such low behaviour of gog.

Jedi_Mercenary: snip..
The first thing(s) you should ALWAYS check when running the older games here at GOG is to right click on the games ICON, go to the compatibility tab, and try some of the "Run in Windows **" older versions (I usually start with the Windows version that was "current" a year or two ahead of it's release date (when most of the developer's work was done) AND ensure the program is being run in administrator mode. Those two things alone will often fix a good portion of the problems. (probably not all though... unfortunately... and it's possible it won't even fix a single one of yours... also unfortunate)

Agreed, but given the fact that Microsoft is evil incarnate I'll cut them SOME slack. But yes, if they sell a game it should work... and the same is true for Steam where I personally have way more problems getting games to run than on GOG, but obviously YMMV.

Also, too, GOG needs to "keep up" with whatever the "current" OS is and ensure games work in that OS. They market as fixing and tweaking games to run on new OS's, and if they don't continue that.. then basically it's just a random luck thing... in other words GOG sells games that will run on Windows ??? (whichever version of Windows was current when GOG started.. I think XP). If you're selling games that only work on XP, you're not selling games that work on modern OS's.

ADDED: I do want to add though, that IMO GOG is BY FAR the best place to buy games. As I stated above, I've had way more problems getting Steam games to run that I purchased than I have GOG games (despite the fact I have way, way, way, WAY more GOG games). I absolutely LOVE Gog. I love DRM free. I want them to succeed. Which is why I believe they should do the things I'm saying above. It's not about just running GOG down in the ground. It's about holding their foot to the fire to ensure they stay the best place to purchase games. Again though... YMMV.

Sorry to keep adding, but I do want to add that I've had sound problems with older games before (SMAC is a prime example) where the sound didn't work. I have a 7.1 surround sound headphone set and so under Control Panel Sound my sound is set up to run at 7.1. When I changed that to Stereo.. I got sound in SMAC. Just throwing it out there in case it helps.

Hmm. Only the sound doesn't work?

Have you tried checking your sound mixer? I've had to go to mine when i have multiple speakers configurations and tell it to use a certain output device as a default rather than whatever was plugged/not plugged in at the time.

Beyond that, i won't ever use Windows 8/10, so i couldn't tell you what would be good to help with on those.

Sorry to break the news to you, friend, but that's not how PC gaming works. There's like literally a billion different PC models and configurations out there. It's impossible to expect that every game will work perfectly in every PC without any effort from the user to configure it correctly, no matter if you buy on GOG, Steam or anywhere else. Thankfully, GOG has a pretty good customer support ready to walk you through the most likely solutions if you are new to PC gaming and know nothing about computers.

EDIT:

I've just installed Sid Meier's Pirates on my Windows 10 notebook and sound works perfectly. I would bet 10 bucks it's just a problem with your audio settings that has nothing to do with the games themselves

While I can't speak for the OP, nobody and I'm assuming the OP also, doesn't expect all games to work on all systems. But if you're getting four out of five not working... then GOG (or Steam or whoever) may be doing something wrong. If you get 4 out of 5 TO work and one not... then yeah, that's just one of those things.
