tinyE: Either way I know I shouldn't give anyone advice, so it's best for everyone that I stay out of this thread.

Lemon_Curry: You're being way too harsh on yourself, tinyE. I'm positive you're perfectly capable of giving good advice. :)
Ummmmmm....

Don't eat the yellow snow.

The really sad thing is, for all those years I was drunk all the time with no excuse, so I quit. What happened?

I was handed a big orange excuse to be drunk all the time.

Thanks you all for great advise. For the rest of this day and Tomorrow I try to stay sober. I'll keep you posted how it went!

Edit": not trying to be a posting bitch, it's just this community is great. (and I'm drunk now)...

Hehe well, good luck!
Btw, maybe don't go from 100 to 0 too sudden. Lower your "allowed" drinks gradually so the body gets more used to the absence of it with time. But also don't take forever to stop.

Sorry, phaolo, but for an alcoholic that doesn't work. :P

There is no "just a drink".

Crowitzer: I know it's not a place for that kind of thing, but still I've got nowhere else to go. Tell you psychiatrist - he'
ll tell you just stop and thats it. Shrinrks don't solve anything ,they just want your money and that's it.
Sounds like you've got a bad psychiatrist (is that even the right term? You need psychotherapy as far as I know, is that even what a psychiatrist is supposed to do?).
Maybe you should try a different one and get informed about the different therapies available.

Mm.. so he should stop completely in one go? It will be hard AF then..
How the hell did you do it tinyE, you don't exactly seem one with a strong will :P
One thing would be to recognise what the hole that craves filling is made out of or made by. Before YOU know that, it is hard to have any success quitting. I used to drink every day but am a rare person who managed to cut down. Most have to become teatotallers, never again a single drop. I used to smoke too but with that I know, I cannot have a single puff ever again. For a long time I avoided situations where it was natural to light up.

i didn't do it.
I've fallen off the wagon a dozen times in the last thirteen years. :P
Also, I'm not a classic alcoholic, and I could never be diagnosed as one.

I'm a binge drinker who drinks not because of an addiction to a chemical but rather to cope with depression.

An alcoholic wants a drink 24/7, regardless of the circumstances. I only want to drink when I get depressed.

I can agree. I tried to cut down several times, it just doesn't work. I always want "just one more". For an alcoholic it's just stop or don't, and wreak futher havoc in ones life. I'ts all just so fucked up....
First of all: Don't take this as an advice!

I stopped drinking when I started to smoke weed. I just liked it more and went from being drunk all day long to being high all day long. Some day (after a few years of smoking and taking all kinds of psychedelics) I realized that weed doesn't really make me high anymore and I suddenly stopped smoking for a few years. Nowadays I only drink or smoke on very rare occasions. I completely stopped everything else (even tobacco). Don't ask me why, it just happened.

Shit came, shit went, I'm still here. But I'm a weird person anyway... When I was smoking, I loved to take long walks through the night and my favorite place were the woods. I'm the only person I know who loved to go into the woods at night, without any kind of light (except the screen of my Nokia 3210 mobile phone, which I needed to roll my joints).

Addiction is a very personal thing. You got to find your very own way out of it and I have no idea how to do this. Waiting till your brain tells you that your addiction can't "help" you anymore is probably the worst way to do this. It worked for me, but... Dope doesn't fuck up your body like alcohol does (it's messing with your brain, but I'm fine with that - as I said, I always was a bit weird).

Good luck. And please look for a new shrink! "Just stop" isn't exactly a useful advice. You can get that one for free from any person out on the streets, or even here on GOG's forums.

Switch to cannabis
What about adverse conditioning? Isn't there some sort of medicine that makes you sick as a dog every time you ingest alcohol? Sounds a bit harsh but I could certainly see it altering behavior.

Yes there is: Antabus. Using that one is really not an option unless you seriously want to quit drinking as some alcoholics have managed to drink anyway and get very sick due to the medicine.
