Ah I've got one that I just remembered : a promotional mini game for the movie Armageddon with Bruce Willis. I can't remember the name or find it online unfortunately :P In the game you swung one of the spaceships with your mouse along an arc in earth's orbit to shoot down asteroids pummeling towards earth. I think you could also upgrade your weapons by shooting down enough asteroids or something. The whole thing built up to a final confrontation with the large asteroid, which I think you were also supposed to shoot down somehow.
Does a game I'm making that I haven't yet distributed count as rare?
Either way I'm not the only one who's played it because my friends have.

Also, while this isn't exactly obscure & many people have played it, I think it gets far less attention than it should.

IronArcturus: Yeah, that Urban Assault game was a lot of fun! I hope GOG can get Microsoft to sign up someday. Here is the wishlist.
Way ahead of you, I pressed that +1 ages ago.
Extermination: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extermination_(video_game) for Playstation 2

Toy Story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_Story_(video_game) for Game Boy

Top Gear: Dare Devil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear:_Dare_Devil for Playstation 2

Kenji for Playstation 2 - a martial arts game where you train with a little bit of linear questing. It was really hard and I was stuck at the beginning.
- So obscure that the interwebs fails to find anything on it.

- Edit: Thank you to HunchBluntley: I got the title wrong and it's actually called Kengo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kengo

You sure you got the title right? I found this one, and it seems kinda close to what you describe.

I just knew that there were several Japanese-themed games starting with "Ken-" and "Ten-" on the PS1 & PS2, and figured it would be fairly easy to mix up the title or get it just slightly wrong. Glad I could help you find it! :)

Exceed20XX: There's quite a few games on Sega consoles that I got this feeling with but that's probably because inn my circles, Sega gamers were (and still are) just quite uncommon I guess.

Android Assault/Bari-Arm (Sega CD)
Dark Savior (Saturn)
Deep Fear (Saturn, man voice acting can get so much worse than the original Resident Evil)
Dungeon Explorer (Sega CD)
El Viento (Genesis/Mega Drive)
Elemental Gimmick Gear (Dreamcast)
Herc's Adventures (PS1/Saturn)
Ninja Warriors (SNES version)
Phantom Dust (Up until the talk of the re-release and remake)
Soldner-X (PC version)
Man... I played ALL of these :)
I am pretty sure I am the only one who played, and LOVED, Recoil.

You play as a Tank, that can turn into a Boat, or a Hovercraft, with really really good combat and level design (for that era, and probably for this era also, lol).
The only bad thing about the game is its sound. Its too high pitched. But, that is the ONLY thing that isnt 100% about the game (after you get used to controlling the top of the tank and the bottom of it separately).

This game is the only reason I still have a Windows 98se system (since gog got all of my old favorites already).
"Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu" on NES. I remember playing the crap out of it when I was young!
Aterix&Obelix XXL2
it was only released in Europe, and it was a really small games that, right now, only work on XP.
I think I'm the only one who played this fun little game
(at least for pc)

PS. After today I found a patch for modern OS, made only few months ago:

I even own the CD :)

Don't know that I loved it, but it was sure entertaining. Except the level I got stuck on because I had no idea where to go, that was annoying. Eventually looked up a youtube video of the level to find out what I was missing.

Played it on Win XP 7 years ago

What about those?

karateka (C64)
J-Bird
Popcorn
NES The Battle of Olympus; it was (is) a very difficult Zelda 2 side view like game, with the Ancient Greece lore... Very good game, how i miss it!

And the so badit's good Saint Seiya NES game that was realeased in France, with awful translation and boring gameplay, still gold for fan like me.
