PainOfSalvation: @fishbaits: I would go for R5 1600 and invest more money in memory & mobo but depends of your needs and budget.
Had contemplated a 1600, but I do fair bit of rendering, so extra cores of the 1700+ are more for my needs :)
Checking online, seems the 1700x can get that little bit higher than the 1700 (guessing it's just a better binned chip)./
Will have to dig about for more results first, see what's what.
Quick check shows that my current cooler (hyper 212 evo) can be used on AM4 brackets. So that'd save the cost of a new cooler & I can always throw in my original cooler back into this system.

Still deciding hehe.

If you're rendering then go for 1700, every extra core counts. Seeing how price is only £11 difference you might as well get 1700X but you will need a cooler.

Apparently $5 for an AM4 backplate thingie for the evo.

Looks just as easy to fit as it did in this build.

Are you sure there's only a £11 difference? That doesn't sound right. I'm seeing $40-50.

Yes all AM3+ coolers are backwards compatible, if you use a mounting kits.

If you search for enough sources you'll reach the conclusion that 1700 is just as overclockable as the 1700x. Save your money.
I bought a 1300x and I regret not buying a 1200.

1700x is £289ish.

Does seem odd, perhaps so closely priced because so similar.

Didn't realise all older coolers were compatible, good to see they made AM4 plates for them all :D
Definitely prefer my eve212 as, whilst the spire looks groovy, it apparently doesn't cool quite as well.
Still checking clips, seems there's a difference between the two processors, but not really much.

Oh, did have a brain wave. If I got the 1700, could sell the spire, as loads want that for the LED thing.
Would make the 1700 even cheaper with money made from that.
Decisions decisions ;)

You shouldn't regret it, i'd go for 1300x as well. 20€ price difference but you get 400MHz higher base clock speed, also XFR goes +200MHz so it hits 3.9GHz while 1200 XFR is only +50MHz and 3.45GHz. The only way i would pick 1200 is if i was on a really tight budget.

Does XFR even work on stock cooler? Because I think it doesn't.

The 1200, 1600 and 1700 are better value because they can be manually overclocked to 1300x, 1600x, 1700x(1800x) values, using the default coolers. XFR is automatically disabled once you overclock manually.

Using aftermarket coolers, allows you to overclock them to 3.9-4.1GHz, at respectable temperatures, but anything higher than 3.9GHz is NOT guaranteed. Neither on the non-X processors, or on the X models.

That was the consensus the last time I checked, unless you can find a recent source(September or later) that claims otherwise. If you can find it, it would be great, as you would be making me feel better about overspending.

I don't have a Ryzen CPU so i cannot confirm it. What i've read and remembered is that the CPU needs to be below a certain temperature threshold. But i agree, it doesn't matter if you plan to manually overclock it.

Have you checked with HWinfo64? I think you might get some XFR. But then again.. the stock cooler of the R3-series is slightly smaller, so I'm not entirely sure.

I'll be honest, I'm not an overclocking enthusiast, so I don't know the tools required to verify/test an overclocked machine. I'm perfectly happy with my current frequencies, but had I known to buy a 1200, I would have been willing to put in the minimal effort required to hit the 1300x values.

Thank you for the hints though.

Is it still so that if you increase the voltage, you void the guarantee?

Yes.

The real question is.. Do they have any way of finding out? ;)
AMD Wraith cooler is now sold separately.
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B074RNSCJM/

Price keeps fluctuating.
Anyone still tempted for a Ryzen build, the 1700 has just had a big drop in price.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2/257-0132916-7274258?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=ryzen+1600

It's actually cheaper than the Ryzen 1400 now.

Also on ebuyer.

https://www.ebuyer.com/784315-amd-ryzen-5-1600-6-core-am4-cpu-processor-with-wraith-spire-95w-yd1600bbaebox

1700 also discounted.

https://www.ebuyer.com/778680-amd-ryzen-7-1700-8-core-am4-cpu-processor-with-wraith-spire-95w-yd1700bbaebox

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Ryzen-1700-16-Core-3-7-GHz/dp/B06WP5YCX6/r

Even Threadripper has been seeing some discounts.

------------------------------

Finally got around to purchasing a few bits.

Mobo choice is Asus ROG Strix, my first non-Asrock board in around a decade.

Also grabbed an Ryzen 1700X & a Antec P8 Midi-Tower with Black Glass Window. Not really fussed about window on cases, but it was there ;)

Just need to scrape together for ram (ye gads, that shizz is expensive compared to last year!), cpu cooler & may grab a HDD, then all set :D
