Within this struggle a hero named Welkin, and his fellow soldiers of the Federation's 7th Platoon, are fighting back against the invasion and the Empires attempts to unify the continent under its power. During the ensuing war the Federation discovers that the Empire possesses a secret weapon, known as the "Valkyria" - an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends. The first of a series of Valkyria Chronicles games published by Sega. A fantasy strategy combat simulation for the Playstation 3. Control a squad lead by a single tank supported by mixed WWII style infantry in a campaign to resist an invasion. Start out with only a few members but slowly swell your ranks, levelling them up and learning new skills and classes and gain resources and upgrades for your tank. Beautifully animated 3D models and a fairly amount of anime-style war drama, which include the super-powered Valkyria, basically walking laser cannons. The enemy starts with one of these, complicating your efforts, but you eventually find one on your side as well. Fairly fun. Most of the action is in your rank and file infantry members though. They learn new skills and traits, both positive and negative and come in various classes with strengths and weaknesses like the fast moving and highly accurate but low endurance scout to the tanky and deadly machine gun toting shocktrooper to the medic who heals and recovers the fallen and the lancer, basically a bazooka toting anti-tank unit. Permadeath is a thing. Managing team mixes and promoting them to better versions of themselves is the key to victory. Along with managing choke points, dealing with pillboxes, capturing enemy spawn points and conquering the map, or surviving a tactical retreat. Your one tank is mainly emergency support and mobile cover, with limited ammo, and the Valkyria are usually something like a saved super power to be used sparingly for plot purposes. Fairly fun. The sequels add more and more features, classes and drama to the mix. 2 and 3 were on the Playstation Portable while the 4th most recent entry was on the Playstation 4. I believe this particular game won some kind of Guinness World Record at one point, but 3 was my particular favorite. Lots of drama, politics involving historical and racial prejudices, etc. Beautiful character designs that still pop up in character shops today.
The game has a heart gripping story of friendship, comradeship and even love in the mids of a brutal war. Even if it is packed with some cliches it is still a wonderful story which does not shy away from showing the ugly sides of war and it's impact of Soldiers and Civillians alike. The Gamemechanics of the Soldiers, their individual potentials made you fell compassion to the characters and gave them meaning, they were more than cannonfodder, they became comrades. The Class System also makes every Class (Scour, Shocktrooper, Lancer, Engineer and Sniper) feel unique since eyery class has it's positives and drawbacks which adds depth to the gameworld itself The game deserves to be on GOG, to be preserverd, for the simple reason thaat it is worth it.

Wild Arms XF
Wild Arms XFWild Arms XF is a 2D turn-based tactical role-playing game, creating a gameplay experience somewhere between Dungeons & Dragons and chess. Players are given control of a small squad of characters (six or less) and placed on a grid-based map resembling a geographical location (a swamp, a town, a river), upon which they fight battles to progress through the game. As with most T/RPGs, positional advantage can be critical to victory, and players are encouraged to outmaneuver their enemies as well as outgun them. The game emphasizes positioning and maneuvering by the inclusion of "Formation Arts," which increase attack damage when an enemy is surrounded by your characters in a line, a triangle or a circle. Wild Arms XF is a member of the small subsection of T/RPGs whose battlefields are based around hexagonal tiles instead of squares. "Combination Arts" return from previous Wild ARMs titles, allowing characters to target an enemy in a waiting state and then deliver their attacks simultaneously with the next ally to attack their target. If the player succeeds in executing an uninterrupted series of commands, the damage inflicted upon enemies will increase significantly. On the other hand, the enemy gets the same advantage.

Wild Arms 4
Wild Arms 4You play as a young teenager named Jude Maverick. You live in a quiet village that floats high above the ground, unaware of the world that lies beneath it. But one day, your world is shattered to pieces, and you descend onto the earth to face the terrible reality: the world of Filgaia was devastated by wars. A few settlements amidst rusty tanks is all that is left of civilization. The democratically elected government has some plans for improving the conditions of the world, but as you meet a young girl whom they used as a tool for their purpose, you realize you must find a better plan to save her, and the world, from complete destruction. The fourth installment of the Wild Arms series abandons its traditional Wild West theme and is set in a post-apocalyptic world. The gameplay system introduces hex-based battles. Battle screens are divided into seven hexes, each one of which can hold several party members or foes. You navigate your characters on the battle field, trying to force the enemy into an uncomfortable position. There is also a variety of skills you can learn and apply in battles to get benefits. As in previous Wild Arms games, the dungeons contain many environmental puzzles to solve.

Breath of Fire
Breath of FireRecognized by Capcom as their first traditional role-playing video game, Breath of Fire would set the precedent for future entries in the series, and features character designs by company head of development Keiji Inafune, as well as music by members of Capcom's in-house sound team Alph Lyla. In 2001, the game was re-released for the Game Boy Advance handheld system with new save features and minor graphical enhancements, with the English version being released in Europe for the first time. Set in a fantasy world, Breath of Fire follows the journey of a boy named Ryu, one of the last surviving members of an ancient race with the ability to transform into mighty dragons, as he searches the world for his sister. During his quest, Ryu meets other warriors who share his quest, and comes into conflict with the Dark Dragon Clan, a militaristic empire who seeks to take over the world by reviving a mad goddess. The game experienced mostly positive reception upon release, and was followed by a direct sequel, Breath of Fire II, in 1994.
