This was one of the first JRPG games I played, when I was a kid, on the unforgettable Playstation 1. The story of the "dragon boy", the battles, skills, bosses... Good old times! I remember playing it with my older brother. So please, GOG!!! Make it happen <3

It was a summer evening in '97. I was a Nintendo 64 kid delighted to finally have a new-gen console. I'll never forget the sheer jealousy and disappointment I felt when I opened up the E3 1997 supplemental book that came with the August 1997 issue of EGM (the one with Luke Skywalker from Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi) and saw a little screenshot for Breath of Fire III...coming ONLY to PlayStation. I just got a N64, there's no way in heck I could convince my parents to get me a PS1 that soon! I'd get the BoFIII strategy guide, despite not having the game or console, and read it front to back, spoiling myself of every major story beat. It's not like I was going to be playing any time soon! It was a lot of waiting, but finally in August 1999 I got a PS1 and Breath of Fire III was my 2nd game (after FFVII). I was blown away by the upgrades in pixel art and animation, vocal cries emanating from my characters as they battled in turn-based combat that took place on the field without a screen transition, a world map devoid of random encounters (hallelujah!), a unique pop/jazzy hybrid soundtrack that I didn't fully appreciate until I got older, a heavily addicting, VERY GOOD...GREAT fishing minigame that you could sink hours into for awesome rewards, a story that took you for a rollercoaster ride of emotions and twists, a dragon gene combination system that still remains the series' greatest dragon transformation system, characters with very distinct personalities and skill sets, and so much more. It took me a whopping 60+ hours to finally finish BoFIII, and I loved it. I want others to experience it, too.

This game has been at the core of my very being for the past 30 years. Absolutely amazing, and I wish they would make more in the series and/or remake/remaster all 5 Breath of Fire games for the new consoles.

I love this game! Back then I played it on the PSOne for hours / weeks / months. Accompanying little Ryu and developing the “dragon genes” combinations with him was just fun. The story was also just WOW!!!

The characters are immaculate along with the art stye. Plus this version of Myria is my favorite one. I love the designs of everyone in this game and capcom should do a remake for this game.

Back in ‘98, I remember perusing my local Blockbuster looking for game to play on my newly-acquired PlayStation. I was looking for something with an engaging narrative but was still new to the RPG genre; A neighbour had only just introduced me to Final Fantasy 7, which piqued my interest. When I came across the North American box art for Breath of Fire 3, I wasn’t sure what to expect — the thing really didn’t give me much to go off of. What could I really intuit from this simple image of a sword floating against a backdrop of fire? If it weren’t for the Capcom logo, I very well might not have given it a shot. Decades later, I still can’t properly emphasize how grateful I am that I rented Breath of Fire 3. I was enamoured right away. The game starts the player off as a petite dragon on the loose, torching innocent mine workers to cinders. From there it sets off on a very personal story that grapples with themes about identity, freedom, balance, atonement, and discovering one’s own purpose in life. There is no grand quest to save the world, but instead an intimate journey to pursue truth and reject the confines of the status quo. The game balances these themes gracefully with a cute, handcrafted art style, in tandem with a catchy fusion-jazz soundtrack. The game knows when to have fun and when to take itself seriously. True, the constant battles and grinding don’t age as well as my rose-tinted nostalgia may want me to believe, but that is the price of admission for what I consider to be a rewarding game experience. And I haven’t even mentioned the Dragon Gene Splicing system, where your main character can transform into a diverse assortment of powerful Dragons. I really do hope this game is selected for preservation on GOG. Funny how a game from almost 30 years ago can have such a profound impact on one’s life, but here we are.
This was one of the first JRPGs I ever played, alongside several others in the PS1 JRPG heyday. I felt that the characters were engaging, heartfelt, well-expressed, and I felt invested in how they grew together. The art style, the music, the Master system, the fishing minigame (probably my all-time favorite fishing anything), just typing this makes me want to hunt it down and replay all over again. This one is not to be lost to time!

An amazing game, I have fond memories of it, it was another shot to JRPG when Final Fantasy was taking most of the screen time, it allowed for different kind of stories and characters, whom I loved very much, and on the top of that it was translated ik french ♥️
