Hawat: You only did the mainstory in those 38h ? because that is what they said for 40 hours.

darkwoof: Nope, I did mainly the main quest and took up some of the side quests, but did not finish a number of them. I'm usually the kind that will focus on side quests on subsequent run, but focus on the main during the first run cos I'm impatient getting to the end of the story.

I'm estimating that if I only do the main plot I'll run roughly about 25 hours or so. Since I'm only doing one of the main branch according to the game guide, taking both branches into consideration (from the game guide it seems like both will lead to quite different situations) I think it'd yield pretty close to the 40hr mark.

In comparison Steam says I played 47hrs on Witcher 1, and that's including completion of some of the mods included and a partial replay of the original campaign.
Now here is the quote from there rep. And match it with your description. Still think that there was no exaggeration ?
"The Witcher ‎@Sarvesh: we're estimating around 40h playthrough for main storyline. But that SHOULD be doubled or tippled... for the non-linearity. :) "
It's a tradeoff between length and choice, methinks. While I single playthrough the game may be around 20-30 hours, keep in mind that you get a hugely different Chapter 2 and probably parts of Chapter 3 depending on whether you're following Iorveth or Roche. The more chapters you add to the game, it becomes harder to maintain the same depth of choice the game currently presents you with. Personally, I'd rather see a shorter game with less-linearity than a longer linear one, but if you prefer the latter than I can understand why you might be unhappy with the length.

That said, I do think Chapter 3 could have been expanded a bit more. After all the buildup the first two chapters get, the third one feels a bit rushed and info-dumpy, although ultimately I was pretty satisfied with its conclusion. The remaining plot threads seem more suited to a full fledged game than another Chapter, IMO.
They said they were going to release "something big" as a dlc. Like a campaign or something. Let's hope it's something long by dlc standards. (8~14 hours)
I think the first DLC they need to release is a tiny epilogue extender that explains even a tiny bit of what your overall choices did.

And more importantly, let us talk with Triss about the Lodge. And give us a recap of the Vergen situation and how it turned out after we leave.

The second DLC ought to be the completion of the Wild Hunt sub-plot. We can ask dozens of people in this game about the Wild Hunt, and what do we get from it? Nothing. No resolution, no Yennefer.

I think Wild Hunt is going to be its own game or a massive expansion, i mean its got alot you can do with it.

Actually its parallel dimension elves, someone at CDPR watched too much "Sliders" :D

The Wild Hunt plot is the only plot in the game thats extremely Interesting so yeah, it must be the "BIG DLC" they talked about. What else is there to do? Sure theres always monsters to hunt but i don't see Geralt as being particularly Interested in this after regaining most of his memories, and learning of his past and Yennefer.

I don't even see why we need a full new game? The graphics are amazing and will be for the next 5 years, all it needs is properly sized expansions from now on. Even if they are not free.
I heard that the whole parallel worlds thing is also in the book, so that's where the inspiration came from.

Also, while I agree that Chapter 3 was short, I think the ending did resolve the whole assassination story thread. You catch Letho, and you can either let him go or kill him, but either way you mostly found out who's behind the assassination. Yeah, you didn't go to the South and kill the Emperor or whatever, but I'm guessing that's going to be either in the expansion or TW3.

Compared to some abrupt cliffhangers in games (Halo 2 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood come to mind), I didn't find the ending to be nearly as frustrating. Yes, we don't know where Geralt is going, but we have a pretty good idea that he's going to go after The Wild Hunt and try to find Yennifer, which will involve going to Nilfgaard.

It took me probably ~30 hours to beat it on first playthrough. Which isn't the longest game ever, but it's still a satisfying length.

My thoughts exactly. I was expecting a really poor cliffhanger ending because of the comments from reviewers, but I felt it wrapped up the kingslayer plot nicely. I am a bit disappointed at the lack of a state of the world art scene where is shows what your decisions have done to the world thus far.

riddleofsteel: Just how long in hours is this game? I read one review saying it was long.
40-120 hours depending if you do all the side quests. That is what one of the devs said. Can't remember where I read it though.
Any way to see how long you played without steam? I finished nearly every side quest for the path I chose and there is no possible way it was over 25 hours. In my opinion the game is definitely too short. I think the idea of having the player's choices really make an impact on the storyline is great, but I feel like in this case designing content for both paths limited the quality of my experience. It honestly felt like they just ran out of time near the end.

And by the way, the quest journal IS written by Dandelion.

Well i did every single sidequest, crafted everything , even replayed some parts to see if i messed up on my choices , took me around 50 hours. Dunno where did they get those 70+ hours o.O and i play slow i take screenies i talk to everyone , etc :)

Awesome game but could use more sidequests , lots more

Ah, then that wouldn't match up with my experience as well. But it could simply be a case of individual abilities at a particular game. Maybe the Devs weren't as proficient? Maybe they were playing at Hard or Insane modes and took longer? I mean, I play more FPSes than RPGs, so they should be easier for me, yet when I look at forums I usually find that I've taken twice or even three times as long as the average player. And FPSes don't even have anything resembling "side quests" in general.
