avatar
xyem: Please.. go and find someone who has been affected by something you haven't and say "well, I've never had a problem with X, so it's fine" to their face.

Repeat until you realise that just because you've never had a problem with something, doesn't mean it isn't crap.

</much_tamer_post_than_I_wanted_to_write>
But that's the point. You can't just say "this thing is crap" and say it as FACT, which is what these people are trying to do. If YOU'VE had a bad experience, that's YOUR opinion. That something bad has happened is a fact, but it's also a fact that I have had good experiences. Im not going to stand down and let other people state things that haven't been proven, to me. You can relate all the stories you want, but none of mine have been terrible about steam. There are disappointments and mishaps but the same could be said about Gog and some of its policies.

Yeah, except that isn't actually how it works.

If you are honest and nice to most people, but lie and steal from a handful of people, you are a liar and a thief. It's not the opinion of those you lied and stole from that you are a liar and a thief, it is an objective fact that you are one.

Yeah, GOG is crap too.

Go ahead. Explain to me why it isn't crap that Steam wouldn't let 2 people with 2 accounts play a game with each other. I'd love to hear it.

EDIT: To clarify, both people had the game on their respective accounts (not shared or anything like that).

A myriad of reasons exist, none of which im willing to debate if you're going to say "steam sucks BLAHABLAHBLAH". I don't know the reasons, I don't know the technicalities, I don't know you are telling the truth. You can be the liar, cheater, schemer. I don't know. I can't trust that, or you, and I don't have to. You won't shame me with forum posts, sorry.

I didn't ask you to debate me on it. I want you to explain why it isn't crap. I want you to give me a reason why it isn't crap. Any reason you can think of where stopping 2 people from playing games that they own on their own accounts together is reasonable.

Any. good. reason. at. all.

I don't know you are telling the truth that you've never had any bad experiences with Steam. I am fine with presuming you are though, how about extending the same courtesy to me?

So you won't stand down and let other people state things that haven't yet been proven to you.. yet as soon as I want to engage you so I can prove my statements to you.. you stand down.

*slowclaps*

Good job standing up for what you believe in.

Meh. Yay, you won a forum debate. Here's your special medal.
Except you haven't proven to me what Steam did to help you out at all, I haven't seen emails sent to the support staff, I haven't seen any sort of communication from the Steam team. There could just be technical issues with your game, with your PC, with your firewall. Again, I don't have these problems, but I would actually like to help you out, if you want it.
Obviously steam has pissed in your cornflakes, but christmas being christmas, Ill try to help as much as I can.

Well.. perhaps you should pay attention. Can't play the game together.

The game runs fine, so it isn't a technical issue with the game, my PC or my firewall.

EDIT: Or hers either.

Here's an idea! Ask for what you want.

(Sorry for the link, I can't attach it because, as I said, GOG is crap and clicking 'attach' doesn't do anything in either of the browsers I use.)

Unfortunately, I need a little more info. I don't know what the game is, I don't know exactly what you're trying to do (Are you trying to play on a LAN? Are you trying to play on separate PCs? The same PC? Same Steam accounts? Different steam accounts? Same locale/different locale? Are you banned from Steam for any issue? Is one of you on a console, another on PC?
And yes, if you are trying to play on different PCs, that different PC may have just a slight difference that could make things worse or not work.
I don't believe that is the issue though.

I will say it again, I don't think it is the games issue.
I would like to know what you are trying to do and how.
avatar
itchy01ca01: Unfortunately, I need a little more info.
That's fine, you can ask whatever you want.

avatar
itchy01ca01: I don't know what the game is,
It's Guns of Icarus Online, but that isn't relevant. The issue is with Steam itself.

avatar
itchy01ca01: Are you trying to play on a LAN?
No, the game is a remote-server-only deal (like an MMO).

avatar
itchy01ca01: Same Steam accounts? Different steam accounts?
Already said we both have our own individual, unshared accounts and we both own the game on our accounts.

avatar
itchy01ca01: Are you banned from Steam for any issue?
No, neither of us are.

avatar
itchy01ca01: Is one of you on a console, another on PC? Are you trying to play on separate PCs? The same PC?
Both on the same PC.

avatar
itchy01ca01: I will say it again, I don't think it is the games issue.
I already know it isn't. The issue is definitely with Steam and I confirmed it with Valve that it is with Steam.

avatar
itchy01ca01: I would like to know what you are trying to do and how.
0) Log into my account on the computer
1) Launch my steam installation
2) Log into my Steam account
3) Launch the game

3.9) Log into her account on the computer
4) Launch her steam installation
5) Log into her steam account
6) Launch the game.

EDIT: Added the logging in to our respective accounts on the computer.

We are stopped at #4. She can't launch Steam. It's not her Steam installation and I am 100% sure of this, because if you do 456 then 123, we are stopped at #1.. I can't launch my Steam installation but hers launches.

I think I've got what your problem is now. Unfortunately, It's something that Steam doesn't do, and an issue I was unaware of as to now. There are problems steam hasn't dealt with.. yet. I did mention this at the bottom of my first post though.
So yea, I now understand why you think steam is "crap".
There are work arounds for this issue though. I was able to find a few youtube tutorials, if you want the links.
avatar
Ebany: It's more about informing those who are unaware of programs like Enhanced Steam how they can purchase games (which may require Steam) from sites other than Valve's own, e.g. Humble Bundle, Bundle Stars, NuuVem, etc. I'm happy to see profit move away from Valve.
avatar
ET3D: I don't much see the point. I mean, telling people how to save money is fine, but if you buy games to play on Steam, wanting Valve to lose money makes no sense. Either buy games on alternate sites like GOG where you won't need Steam, or play on Steam and know that your ability to play the games depends on Steam's continued success.
Been happy to see revenue spread around the community to other vendors/merchants other than Steam doesn't mean I dislike Steam. Couldn't count the number of times I've seen someone purchase a Steam deal only to crack when it's posted cheaper the next day. There are extremely good tools available to help people avoid these situations, tools which most people don't know about or are unsure how to use them.
TIL I'm 7 types of everything if I don't do things in a particular way.

Btw, how is "Avoiding game download/install by using Idle Master to get Steam Trading Cards is not cheating" a tip on how to correctly make purchases? Seems to me the purchase has already been done in this case. I IZ SO CONFUSD
avatar
ignisferroque: 6.) NEVER use the Steam client to purchase games, only for account changes (wallet deposits, etc).

Why?
Because the best add-on's (e.g. Enhanced Steam or Steamdb) don't work on the Steam UI, and ultimately this thread was started to announce these powerful tools to those who care.
avatar
xyem: Despite hating Steam (and my hate only grew when I started using it) and wish it would stop existing, I was happy when it came to Linux. Why? More choice for everyone, even if I think it is a bad choice :)
So very true. I'm a big fan of choice.
avatar
Grargar: I guess the recent region locking announcement has something to do with it.
I think the region locking is a troubling announcement.

I think we could all agree that almost no discussion about those who manage our digital rights remains constructive, in fact there are many comments prior to yours which emphasise my point.

moonshineshadow: ....... it would be great if there would be not steam exclusive games anymore so that everyone really had free choice for every game.
I agree *sigh*
X:Games by Egosoft are now Steam only, and so is Civ. Two of my favourite games (after The Witcher of coarse) and I can no longer play the new material without Steam. Heartbreaking.
