No, there are quite a few fanboys/girls who say it is the best game ever, but a statement like that could never actually be true of anything. Ever implies that it will surpass everything to come and I'm sorry, but these fanboys don't know what is to come.

Perhaps, and clearly it's not the best game *ever*, but that doesn't mean it's horribly overrated. Just overrated by some. It's pretty accurately rated by most as epicwinomgwtfbbq.

would you mind defending your claim with a neat well thought out list of bulletins here on the forum so I can nitpick and pull them apart?

Final Fantasy saga IS overrated. FFVII and FFVI are just the best games in series.
PS: For example, FFVIII is horrible, FFIII is tedious and FFV is a shame of a game.

I liked FFIX quite a bit...

It's graphics do not surpass what was available at the time, infact in comparison it looks like an N64 game, infact it was supposed to be on the N64. The game was heavily edited and many parts of the plot do not make sense. The villain in the game is hardly dastardly. He's more of just an emo kid who's kind of like "wah I want to see my mommy.. ;_;'

Can't really see what's so amazing about that game. I tried it once, and I just found it to be... bad. The characters was mostly horrible, and the game almost played it self.
I haven't played many JRPG's though, so I don't really have much to compare with apart from FFIII DS and Chrono Trigger DS.

All valid points, but nevertheless they game was, in my opinion, all of those things I mentioned. It was very silly in places, but also quite moving in others (such as the death of Aeris. zomg spoilerzzzz!). Had great music, at times - despite the massive midi limitations, combat system was top notch, overall it was just great.
If you don't feel that way, fair enough but that's a shame because it is one of the all time greats. I actually reinstalled it and got it working on vista not so long ago. Managed to play it quite a bit but then ended up getting random CTD's which is pretty terrible in a game like this. I'd love to play it all the way through again, but just not possible unless I can get it stable.

I think that FFVII was good for its time, but has since been surpassed by other games in its genre. Xenosaga for instance, and im sure there are more than just that. When compared to most JRPGs though, FFVII is one of the best. Unfortunantly, thats more due to the lack of innovation, and "same old, same old" plots and characters that plague the genre.
