xyem: If so, it doesn't apply (to me at least). I have no intention whatsoever of "crusade downrepping" anyone.
Just... be cautious. To keep with the theme of overused quotes: with great power comes great responsibility.

avatar
xyem: I'm curious. What about that makes it "crossing the line"?
It's just a hunch. It's not actually about WHAT you do, rather HOW and WHY. Your posts contained trace amounts of... something that caught me off guard. Hard to qualify...
Just remember not to let power go to your head... and knowledge IS power.
Even more importantly - be careful what you share with everyone. Even if it is publicly available or easy to figure out...

teshra: So if I understand this edit correctly, what you are saying if you get the timestamps for a particular forum user who makes a post, and within an hour somebody got de-repped, that would be your proof that the person who posted clicked the minus button?
No, you've (quite reasonably) misunderstood. What I requested was the timestamps of all the posts in a topic the suspect was active. I would then plot a graph of that users post times against the rep loss times and post that. If it showed a correlation, it would be evidence of my suspicions (but not proof, that would require actual rating data) and if not, it would show they weren't doing anything "behind the scenes". So yeah, the first anyone heard of my suspicions in that latter case would very well have been "I thought X, but it doesn't seem to be the case". Without any externally verifiable data, I had nothing to back my claim up, which is why I haven't made it public.

avatar
teshra: I gotta be missing something because there is no way logically that situation A (posting) would lead anyone to assume situation B (downrepping) was being done by the same person between 1 and 60 minutes later.
That is why I needed the forum timestamps, I'd have better granularity (~15 minutes). It is reasonable to think there is a link when something happens "at the same time" as something else over 10 times, but doesn't happen any other time..

I would really like to make further comment on this, but it would be really obvious (if it isn't already) who I was referring to if I did and I don't want to just voice my suspicions without any verifiable supporting evidence at all.

avatar
teshra: Hundreds of people make posts every hour, maybe a handful get uprepped and derepped in that same hour. How do you know that particular forum user isn't actually uprepping and someone who hasn't even posted in that hour is downrepping?
I wouldn't. Again, it wouldn't be proof, it would be evidence supporting my suspicion.

avatar
teshra: Besides that, how does this theory give credence to the multiple accounts theory? Do you think someone with 100 accounts is logging each in systematically, making a post to show their presence and then going to downrep posts from months ago such that this system will catch that person in the act? Because if that's the case, this OCD person has 100 accounts each with well over 100 rep while systematically targeting their enemies.
... why are you bringing up the 100 accounts thing? That's just.. weird. It has nothing to do with what is being discussed.

avatar
teshra: I don't know man, seems like a huge leap to take if I'm following correctly. Very extreme conspiracy theory with a bunch of assumptions being made. Feel free to make it more clear because this part doesn't seem logical the way I currently read it.
What is a "very extreme conspiracy theory"? What are the assumptions?

I am cautious. Very much so. I'm also very glad that people have spoken out when it even looks like I might be about to do something bad. That's what true friends do.

However, if we are using overused quotes, just remember the the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing :P

Out-of-characterism, I hope.

The system I stated clearly goes against things I believe in and have stated to believe in on these very forums. RepLog would have been far more useful if it wasn't opt-in, but there is good reason why I made it that way..

gg wp xD

Most likely.
In my defense - I've been hurt before, so I have trust issues ;P.

I've just realized I haven't posted there yet...
EDIT: done ;P.

Sure sounds like it:

avatar
xyem: Well if they are allowed to get away with downrating all of a users posts to remove their rep, seems like it would be fair game for the community to do the same to them.
After all, it would just be the communities "opinion" that they are abusing the post rating system, which is apparently what the post rating system is for!

jamotide:
I added an edit after that statement, clarifying it.
EDIT #2 (for future readers): The above comment is laden with sarcasm. I argue against the usage of the rating system as a opinion-imposing tool. Post should be rated, individually (not by poster), on their (as much as possible) objective merit. I believe the only action the community should take against downreppers is reporting them to GOG to be dealt with.
I'm sure you just missed it as it was added quite a bit after you would have read it the first time, but please be more careful as it was there when you went back to copy the first part.
So, what do you propose to do with habitual downreppers, once you have found them out?

jamotide: So, what do you propose to do with habitual downreppers, once you have found them out?

xyem: If I found out with very high confidence that someone in particular was abusing the rep system, I would report them to GOG and simply leave if GOG refused to do anything about it at all.

jamotide: So, what do you propose to do with habitual downreppers, once you have found them out?
Now I don't want to incriminate myself but I will say that online and perhaps even offline lives will get quite difficult for these people.

Of course for appearances xyem is stating that he'll only speak to GOG but uhhh, wink wink nudge nudge, you know what I'm saying.

Of course, Xyem has nothing better to do than to become the RepAvenger and hunt those people down. Yep.

It's not only that - he's implying that xyem is consciously deceiving us regarding his true intentions about how he's going to use findings.
I find this quite insulting for both xyem and the rest of us.

...and to the GOG team, since they'd presumably smell it if something were fishy :P
avatar
xyem: Snip
Don't mind me then. I knew it was something I was missing which turned out to be me taking your edit which I quoted earlier for "proof" when you meant "suspicions". That one interpretation made all the difference. As for bringing up 100 accounts, I thought from prior threads that that possibility was always in play when discussing rep abuse. If not, probably misread something. Carry on then.

Just consider that it would take much more time to track and report each abuse to the gog team rather than just clicking on - next to offenders posts. So yeah, he obviously has enough time for both. But I find it not insulting at all that you imply that someone wanted to insult you.
