Cold steel, colder ale!

Volgarr the Viking, a hardcore 2D side-scrolling arcade action platformer with gallons of blood, extreme bad-assery, and a daring difficulty level, is available 16% off on GOG.com. That's only $9.99 for the first week.

Rise, warrior! Bow to the 16-bit gods of the Arcade'ian Golden Age! Heed Odin's call! You are to become a mythical hero, the stuff of legends passed over goblets of ale at smelly inns, for years to come. Village elders will erect statues in your honor, Viking women will give your name to their firstborn sons, and men of the North will scream Volgarr!!! when storming enemy ranks, to instill dread in their foes' hearts. Of course, if you explode into a bloody fountain of bones and gore, that might not be the case. After all, here, now, you are still just a nameless, hairy, half-naked savage thrown against countless bloodthirsty foes. Can you become the legendary Volgarr the Viking? I dare you.

Volgarr the Viking is an awesome tribute to the most brutal and demanding arcade games of the 80s and 90s. With precise mechanics, simple controls, and challenging difficulty level, combined with pixel-perfect animation and a soundtrack worthy of a truly epic adventure, the game is sure to hold you in its mighty grip for hours on end.

Have your bloody blade ready and become the legendary Volgarr the Viking for only $9.99 on GOG.com!

HiPhish: TB is not a reviewer and using the word "casual" like that is just wrong (Ghost & Goblins is a casual game compared to PC standards). It is "disrespectful to people's time" in the sens that there is very little margin for error. Take a lok at a game like Castlevania on NES and see how much abuse you can take before dying.
No, it's a bullshit argument. Saying that it "disrespect your time" is not a valid argument because the time that someone decides to dedicate to playing games is entirely personal. Rating a game more poorly because a game doesn't measure up your arbitrary personal dedicated time-slot for playing games isn't an objective criticism of a game.

I definitely agree with this but including only one difficulty (regardless of game) and no demos is as bad as that.

HiPhish: I just saw TotalBiscuit's video and it kiled all my interest in the game

There are challenging games like Castlevania or Contra, but they are not nearly as hard (except those pseudo-3D stages in Contra, I hate those) as this. I like a good challenge, but this is just pure punishment.

RevGalen: Yeah, that convinced me not to buy this game.
Watch NL or Force videos
They (especially Force) are much better at game and make it past level 1

Yeah me too, people say Total Biscuit isn't good at those games. I'm only average and this looks too difficult. If they had a few more checkpoints, I would be there in a flash.

Maybe if it comes on a big sale I will give it a try in the future.

Not sure how easier difficulty would work when you are one-shot killed by enemies (or 2/3-shot killed with shield/helm), introducing something like a health bar would just screw up the design. Less enemies? Perhaps but the actual hard parts aren't hordes of enemies but single ones near areas where you need to jump.

Also, the entire design goal of the game as stated by the devs was a hardcore really challenging arcade-like action platformer, and they went through Kickstarter to fund it, why would they now put difficulty modes in when they managed to get the creative freedom they wanted by being funded by kickstarter? Isn't it just easier to admit that they made a game which isn't for everyone?
This game looks awesome, thanks for adding.

svmariscal: I'd say this is more like a tribute to Rastan

haydenaurion: Bingo.
Bingo x2!
Damn it, GOG, stop releasing games I want to play!

JudasIscariot: I am glad that the feature is there. It lets those of us who don't have a particular controller know that they can still play :). While I play on an Xbox 360 controller, it's good to know I can play the game with, say, a Logitech.
Of course, I appreciate it as well (especially since I still have a Logitech Rumblepad 2 around which happens to be the best controller ever - perfect size, perfect grip and indestructible!). It's just sad that these days this feature is so rare that it actually deserves to be mentioned... well, almost... uhm... oh come on, making this the *first* entry in the feature list was some kind of joke, wasn't it? :D

There is no rating and there is no review. Even the video is called "my thoughts on". Besides, the game is right there on display. anyone can judge from the gameplay alone without his commentary if they will like it it. Playing a game on a show floor or while commentating in harder than at home, so everyone will play badly under those circumstances. When he made his video of Shank he played worse than me but I instantly knew that Shank is the type of game I would want to play an i would be better at it.

What are you even trying to say? That his review is wrong? There is no review. That he is not good at it? He even admits it himself. That the game is not unfair? He says that over and over again. Maybe calling it "disrespectful of people's time" is not a good choice of wording, but the point stands that it requires a lot of pattern memorization and repeating, you can't argue with that. And the reason it does so is because it's modeled after old arcade games that were designed to deliberatly suck coins out of children's pockets.

It was mostly for the reason that it would catch the reader's eye and answer a technical question quickly. The order the features are listed in carries no importance as all are equally awesome :P
avatar
HiPhish: if you look at the good video you see that there is very little to no error involved. A regular person is going to make errors, so the player is *very* good, not indicative of a regular player. That's grat for people who are *really* good at these games. Even TB admitted the game is not unfair, just really hard.

FWIW, I got the impression that no matter how good this guy is, the recorded playthrough is far from his first or second one - there're at least a couple of times you can tell that he knows and anticipates what's coming next.

Yo, don't point that tongue at me! It confuses the hell out of me! I don't know whether you're being sarcastic or dissing me or what... but yeah, I kinda see your point. Although you guys might consider making the supported controller type a tag or something. Speaking of which, I'm still waiting for tags that tell me whether a game has splitscreen or hotseat support etc.. :P
This game reminded me of this series:

Not a great gameplay but i loved the design of those 2 games (even though they were pretty different).

Watching TotalBiscuit play something may kill interest in playing *any* game.
