Yep, they're taking it down. One of the largest patch and demo collecting sites will not be updated any longer, and who knows how long it'll take before they decide to wipe it from the internet.

Because FUCK THE USERS, that's why.
Ah Fileplanet...The place where I used to download my WoW patches years and years ago

Sad to see an old website like this fade away
They still live?

Man ..I'm surprised.
Uha. Aren't thousands of Morrowind mods hosted on fileplanet? And aren't all those fansited ("Planet Morrowind", "Planet Vampire", etc.) and their forums a part of fileplanet?

Also, is there any confirmation from a neutral source? Gamefront is a direct competitor to Fileplanet, and has had some shady PR actions in the past.
I think the reasons they give for the closure sound perfectly reasonable.

If you go to Fileplanet, there's a note on the top of the page that says the site is no longer being updated and will be archived.

Just because they're direct competitors (and they even mention people should move their stuff to their service...) doesn't mean they would use this to kick them while they're down.

I hope...
And this is why automatic patching is good.

*Cough* Skyrim *Cough*
Didn't Fileplanet always require you to create an account to download files? Because it always seemed to for me, which turned me off.

Too bad for everyone else who used Fileplanet a lot.
Never liked Fileplanet, interface sucked. Gamefront is not bright either, but they're not that bad. They also have good articles, btw i read this one just now:

Good thing I backed up all the Unreal Tournament mod installers I care about to a DVD.
For mods there is ModDB.

I think you have the cause and the effect mixed up. Automatic patching with newer games is probably the reason why IGN doesn't see much reason to keep up the service, as most new PC games don't get separate patches anymore. So since automatic patching is the cause for IGN's decision, I fail to see how it is the "good" in this case. :)

Also, automatic patching will not apply the user mods and unofficial patches, which will be lost as well, to your games either.

I thought it wasn't being taken down, they were just firing the team and letting it stagnate?
It's time to download all the mods to half life I could find there.

The biggest website, the most helpful mods database in the world is going to the drain. 2012 really is the end of the world.
