hansschmucker: Slow as hell (I'd say about 15 to 20 fps and it's not even FullHD) at most times, with occasional drops to around 3 fps if there are any physics involved;

Wishbone: Now this is something I do not understand at all. If you make games for a fixed hardware platform (meaning one set of specs only), you damn well make sure that your games do not exceed those specs! No console game should have any noticeable drop in framerate, ever! If it does, then the developers are incompetent.

Can't agree more. Whoever did the project lead definitely messed up. Looks to me as if they started building the content before the engine was in any state that they could get performance estimates from, only trying to glue code and content together when they were close to the release date. It didn't fit, but because they were too close to release for any big delays they just went ahead with what they had. And since few people complained, they left it like that.

hansschmucker: And since few people complained, they left it like that.

Too few people complain. If you don't complain about shitty products, and just keep buying them regardless, guess what you're gonna get? More shitty products!
Here's what IGN says about the graphics:
While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected.
...
For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner.
Here Gamespot:
The visuals, which don't always hold up to close scrutiny but are impressive during typical gameplay, are comparable and feature the same quirks (shadows that flicker, for example) on both consoles.
There was no demo available at the time and so, after reading these and many other reviews like them I went ahead and bought it. They say that the framerate issues are minor, even if the game can't even provide 25 fps during an average scene. Good console games provide 60fps for god's sake. And it's not even as if the world looked particularly stunning in return. A basic LOD system could already have improved things considerably, but no, it was good enough as it was.

pb1866: The creations are, afterall, their own. It's their right (and mistake) to protect it as they please.

And ours to not buy it..:P
You make great points, just, yeah..I refuse.

pkt-zer0: A blog post on the horrors of GTA 4.
What I don't get is how they can screw up so badly if they delayed the game more than half a year? Did everyone in QA say "yeah, this works perfectly now", and somehow missed the arduous installation process and horrible optimization?

I've recently learned the DRM is implemented around the last week before release and this tends to render a lot of the configuration testing they've done redundant. Heard this straight from a developer and writers too..so that's a factor.

Wishbone: Well, even if the game wasn't infected with SecuROM and riddled with technical problems, Yahtzee's review of Saints Row 2 convinced me that that's probably more fun to play. I'll probably buy that when the PC version comes out in January, depending on what DRM it uses.

Saint's Row 2 has advertising -- I'm not sure which I hate more.

Shmutt: Just bought the game. It's a huge pain in the ass to install and even play. Anybody got any link where I can download a cracked exe? :P.

Here.

hansschmucker: However, there haven't been any updates that changed the actual engine. At least not in any way that's noticeable.

Well it like, just came out. :P
Anyway a couple driver updates for it have come out and they've said a patch for the game itself is due any day now. Check and [url=http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_gtaiv_downloads.html]here.

Well if Saints Row 2 is going to have advertising, it better be free or else I'm not playing it. :)

We were talking about the PS3 version, not the PC version :)

Hard to keep track. Ahhh
I'll sum it up for you: The past support for the PS3 version doesn't give me much hope for the PC version.
