Since I started in the forums almost a month ago I've already gotten a few recommendations (Sacrifice, for example) on what titles are fantastic games that must be played. I'm looking to flesh out my wishlist with some great games.

So tell me, what games would you recommend?

Also, hello to you all. I never did properly introduce myself. Thanks in advance! :)
Welcome. Hope I see you around.

As for a recommendation I always suggest Scratches if you are into horror games you can get a demo for it here http://www.fileplanet.com/158220/150000/fileinfo/Scratches---Demo.

Guacamelee just came out and it is extremely fun, definitely worth a look. You also get another game by the same studio for free if you purchase it before September 5th.

Hello you to you as well. I also have never officially introduced myself, so "Hiya GOG!" :)

I'm not going to recommend you anything like Deus Ex, HoMM 3, Jagged Alliance 2, Arcanum or even Temple of Elemental Evil. Not because I don't think they are great games, but because everyone knows they are great. Here are a few that I've enjoyed that don't get as much love as they probably should.

Incubation is a nice turn based tactical with puzzle elements to it. Success isn't just getting a big gun and charging the Scay'ger. Your weapons can overheat or some foes can only be attacked from the rear. It can take a lot of consideration of the environment and enemies as to how to approach any given mission.

SWAT 2 is real time tactics game that I absolutely hated the first time I played. That was before I read the manual. It really did set the framework for the sequels and plays somewhat similarly. Further, you have two campaigns: one for SWAT and one for the terrorist organization.

and [url=http://www.gog.com/game/stronghold_crusader]Stronghold Crusader RTS meets econo-sim. Fun games for fans of either genre. Siege and be sieged. Create a bread empire. Bring out the trebuchets! Fun times, man. Fun times.

SotS: The Pit A fun roguelike. I definitely preferred this to Dungeons of Dredmor. I haven't bought the DLC yet. In fact, I may wait until both are on sale and buy them on GOG since I currently have it on Steam.

Tropico My favorite city builder/econo-sim. I can't put my finger on it. Maybe its the edicts, or the election rigging, or the setting, or the music... I just don't know. I can only tell you that it is fun. Tropico 2 is a very hit and miss game. Some like it, some dont'. Tropico 3 is essentially a 3d remake with a few new additions. I'd recommend trying the first, and if you enjoy it, then pick up 3 on sale.

An interesting hacking game. Change school records, hack bank accounts, discover shadowy plots. Give it a shot. I remember the feds were freaking out that "OMG it's a hacking sim!!!" Yeah... If you give it a go, I would recommend [url=http://guide.modlink.net/]this site in addition to the manual.

Are these "must plays?" Perhaps not. But I feel it would be a shame not to give them a try eventually.

Thanks!

I'm vacillating on Guacamelee. I'll have to read up on it.

In before Sacrifice
Alpha Centauri, if you ever played a CIV game you should love this. The game manages to bring to life the factions struggling to build their utopia. Their Ideologies are very well defined and each offers a different perceptive and experience. The tech tree and building descriptions are full of memorable quotes while the bio of the leaders are full of little details that make you smile (Free Scotland, Christian States of America etc).

If you haven't played any Civilization game or anything similar then I don't know. If you think you might like turn based strategy games I would still recommend it. If you're interested in shooters and action games then it's not for you.

zaine-h: :)
what styles you like?
there are so many games... old and new, good and bad :D
Let's see:

Race Driver: GRID: one of the Best, if not the Best racing game currently on sale here

System Shock 2: It's a classic

Torchlight: A very good, and very modable "Diablo clone"

Leisure Suit Larry : Everybody should play as Larry
The GOG testers made a "Starter mix" GOGMix that I think is pretty good. Maybe check it out and see what's in a genre you're interested in?
http://www.gog.com/mix/gogs_starter_mix

As for my favourites on GOG, a few good ones would be:
- Deus Ex (FPS/RPG)
- Thief (Stealth)
- Freespace (space combat)
- Syberia or The Longest Journey (Adventure)
- Baldur's Gate or Planescape: Torment or Fallout (RPG)
- SWAT 3 or Ghost Recon (tactical FPS)
- Syndicate (real-time tactical?)
- Enclave (action adventure)

markx182:
nice and short explanation
+1
What have I enjoyed that hasn't already been mentioned?

Outcast - immersive open alien world thing
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver - 3d platforms and puzzles
Anachronox - Adventure / JRPG hybrid set in a crazy future, planet hopping
Flatout - Knock-about racing fun
Realms of the Haunting - unique blend of FPS and adventure but showing its age
Broken Sword - point and click rivalling Lucasarts (same people made Beneath a Steel Sky which is free here - check it out!)
The Incredible Machine Megapack - This would get called 'casual today' - puzzle games where you put components together to make crazy Heath Robinson / Rube Goldberg machines
City Builder series (Pharaoh, Ceasar, Zeus etc) cool historical city building series
Wing Commander series - nostalgic space combat series, rivaled X-Wing, showing its age though
Psychonauts - very cool puzzle platformer from Tim Schafer's 'Double Fine'
There that should keep you going to a while! Something for everyone!
Rayman Origins - On par with the best Mario 2D games, IMO. Rayman Legends could be even better
Guacamelee - A metroidvania that I actually enjoyed more than Metroid and Castlvania games.
Botanicula - What I imagine a Pixar point-and-click game to be like
Race Driver GRID - Probably the best PC racing game you can buy right now. GRID 2 was a disappointment

zaine-h: So tell me, what games would you recommend?
Just to throw some out there from some of my personal favorites from various genres:

Stronghold / Stronghold Crusader:
Best castle sims ever made. The former one is definitely better for newbies as it provides a fun campaign and is better at teaching you the game's mechanics, but the latter has overall better longevity and its Arabian-style music is very lovely. It takes a really special RTS to hold my interest these days as I've fallen out of love with the genre over a decade ago. I most certainly love coming back to this one.

Descent 1&2
Despite me having played both numerous times these two are still such a blast to play to this day. One of gaming's best action franchises bar none. Quite playable with keyboard-only controls (I would certainly not recommend a mouse), but a proper flight stick does certainly make the whole experience even more fun.

Wing Commander: Privateer
Pixelated and old as hell as this action flight sim is, it's still my favorite Elite-style game due to a great setting and very fun gameplay. Also my favorite WC game. (flight stick recommended)

Rayman Origins
I was really surprised by how much I loved this whimsical 2D platformer. Without a doubt the top of the class as far as pure fun is concerned with some very tight controls.

King of Dragon Pass
One of the few gems I've never even heard of until it's GOG re-release. This fantasy clan simulator is unique, fun, and always different every new time you play.

Gemini Rue
Surprisingly I found this lovely adventure romp to easily rival some of the greats in its genre. While some may not be too keen on the 'action' scenes, I actually quite enjoyed the breakup in gameplay with a little more direct input.

Master of Orion 2 & Alpha Centauri
They may be old, but they're still some of the best 4x games this side of the galaxy. Neither one has ever really been trumped since their release.

Locomotion
I'm always baffled by how much hate this game gets, especially as I found OpenTTD's menu system to be a cluster**** in comparison to Locomotion's relatively easy-to-use system. Anyway, this is pretty much my go-to game for relaxing (along with its older cousin RCT2). Building train routes, as always, is the most fun. Choo choo! ;)

Buying just the 8th would be a huge disservice to yourself, 6+7 is an absolute must.
