On a couple other sites and forums I browse, I've noticed a large number of people signing up due to free Duke 3D.

Free classics bring the people in! It does indeed seem to work very well. I'm surprised there wasn't a server overload like with Fallout, though. (Maybe b/c it's for 48 hours instead of 24 and some features were disabled on the site?)

You know that this is a marketing ploy into buying you games you don't really want so you can complete a fake "collection".

It's not a bad thing, but GOG is certainly not doing it to do you a favour. Heck, their removal of site features prior to this sale has caused zero buys from me. As I own all GOGs I want I can only be tempted by impulse buys. And without knowing what I own and what not before going to the game page, my impulsiveness is significantly hampered.

They should make an option to buy the entire GOG catalog at the same time, on sale, just to see how many people would do it.

That made me curious about what the price would be. :P
