When ever I want to try an old game for free (legally) I check my book mark for that page and pick one at random. :)

captfitz: how are the mechcommander games? i've always been curious about them...

They're really good fun. I've not played #1 for years, mind. But I keep reinstalling MechCommander2 on about a yearly basis. Not the longest campaigns (around what? 20/25 missions or so?), but still, incredibly enjoyable for a couple of days.
I've just recently reinstalled, actually, and I'm running my way through a couple of mod-campaigns atm. Some of them are VASTLY more brutal than the vanilla campaign. 50% losses per mission aren't unheard of..
If you want another site that offers free and LEGAL games, you can try Liberated Games.
Kongregate has a nice selection of games and achievements for it's members.
This is a MORPG on the site that is pretty decent. It's like an MMO with a Final Fantasy combat system.
If you want to be a friend of mine on the site, I go by the same name. =)

Wishbone: Why did you put this in the Steam category, rather than in the Racing category? Yes, you can get it through Steam, but you can just as well get it directly from the game's own homepage (http://trackmania.com), and not have to bother with Steam at all.

cogadh: Not just Trackmania. Except for maybe Codename Gordon, I'm pretty sure all those games are available in non-Steam versions.
edited =) Only Codename Gordon and Peegle Extreme is Steam-exclusive games, Coil is a flash game and it's avaliable on Kongregate

I'm gonna have to download that after I'm done with Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Good find I remember reading about that in a PC magazine...

This one is freaking awesome:
Voxelstein 3D
The game is basically a Wolfenstein 3D clone but with really awesome pixel graphics and EVERYTHING is destructible with rag doll like physics for the enemies.
Download file here.
