But spamming up Twitter seems a bit ..... ahem ..... cheesy.
Much like asking people to spam up forums with reference links or stuff.

so no, you cant compare it to spamming forums. you could compare it to sending PMs to one forum user upon his request, that's it.
People, @username is a reply, not a direct message with starts with D username; the difference is that the first is (@) can be seen in your stream so basically anyone can see it and the second (direct message) is only seen by the recipient and you can only send it if he is following you as well.
So, to put this straight once and for all: the '@GOGcom I want a Good Old Game for free http://www.gog.com #GOGgiveaway' will be seen by all those who follow you or check your account (if public). That's the whole point, getting people to know about GOG by making you spread the word.
