I thought it was pretty shitty too, because let's face it, our politicians have no regard for homeless people, and too many people just don't care. And I think it's pretty sad that there are so many police willing to disregard human decency to uphold stupid laws that have no practical application.
They've been doing this for six years, and now somebody decides it's not ok? At least they're looking into other options and hopefully will continue. Threatened with arrest for trying to help those less fortunate - ah yes, good old America.
edit: and from their website, which goes into a little more explanation than the Yahoo thing:
"In the past, we have had a good working relationship with the Raleigh Police Department. We knew that we could not use the park itself, as doing so required a permit, but that it was acceptable to set up on the sidewalk, as long as we did not block the sidewalk and cleaned up after ourselves. We have operated, unmolested, under this assumption for the last six years.
By the way, each permit to use the park costs $800. Yes, eight hundred dollars. That would cost us $1,600 every weekend, and the officer we spoke to said the City likely wouldn’t approve it anyway."
langurmonkey: What?
Nice people planning to feed homeless people. Then Police tells them "No".
Dzsono: It's more like, "Nice people have been feeding homeless people for six years. Then Police suddenly tells them "No"."
Something happened that the article does not cover. I'm just saying there is more to this story and shouldn't be taken at face value, despite the unsettling possibility that charity is being wrongfully shutdown.
"each permit to use the park costs $800. Yes, eight hundred dollars. That would cost us $1,600 every weekend"
Well, there you go. Some ass probably said "Hey, we can be making money here."
