frostcircus: Jagged Alliance 2 is definitely in my top 5 games of all time.
And this isn't nostalgia talking, since it's only been about 18 months since I first played the game. It's just fantastic.

Wolfox: Isn't your avatar picture an image of a certain JA2 mercenary? :-)

"Got a bad puncture wound here! Losing.... blood!"
Yep. It's only been 18 months, but the game's already entered my brother and I's subconscious minds, and we quote it all over the place.
at last! JA2 :_)
im very interested in disciples 2 but i cant work out what type of game is actually is :/
seems a lot like heroes of might and magic and the new kings bounty??
jagged alliance reminds me of fallout tactics. similar game types and style?

Generally speaking, it's similar, though definitely not the same. For instance, your troops are not composed of tons of individuals, but individuals who gain experience and level up. There are many other differences, enough to make it very different from the HoMM series.

Jagged Alliance 2 is probably more closely related to X-Com than to Fallout Tactics, since you have some strategic, high-level management as well. It's not only tactics (unlike JA2:Unfinished Business, which I'd say is closer to Fallout Tactics).
I have these two already. And thus so, have sunk a good amount of my life into each.
Strategy gamers, be warned!

jmgreen7: JA2...but I'm wondering how hard is it?... I
Will I get to mission 3 and want to quit because I've lost 50 times?
Does it require hours and hours of studying how all the units/stats interact to start playing effectively?

Trimmed a little for space but here we go.
Difficulty: Does have a toggle, but even on easy it's a good challenge. You will get to certain parts that require a good rethink to conquer. Expect to loose a fair starting off bit if you are new to the genre (or series).
There are no actual missions per say, you do have an over-arcing quest with mini-quests inbetween, but if you get stuck, backtrack and attack/liberate a different town.
Stats are fairly minor to learn and you'll pick them up quick, (in short) aim for mercs with 90+ scores in abilities you want to focus on to ease the challenge.
There are strategy guides around if you want to work out the math, but it's not a real requirement.

thanks for the info
Jagged Alliance 2, I've been waiting for that one :) I love turn-based tactics games, but I haven't been all that lucky with the ones I've played. UFO: Enemy Unknown is a great game and I think even for today's standards it is still very good in most respects. Unfortunately it is pretty unforgiving and always the first time I have to defend a whole city from all kinds of giant aliens I don't have a chance. Eventually, some time, I'm going to play it again and actually succeed.. The other notable one is Silent Storm which I bought and also liked a lot, and I was quite impressed by how lengthy most missions are and yet I didn't get bored. Unfortunately because of the length I eventually did lose interest. And, in fact, it can also be very frustrating in the beginning. I mean, how can I actually play a Scout, a guy focused on using pistols, when I alone and without a team, yet, am pit against dozens of enemies armed with rifles in some of the very first missions?
Anyway, from all I've heard I still haven't played the genre's prime, so I'll definitely buy it :) "Unfortunately" I've got so many games to play right now, so I guess it will take a while until I finally get to play this classic :)

I've played both of the games you mentioned! Xcom is one of those classics everybody loves. I also really enjoyed Silent Storm (though I agree with you that it often sort of dragged, and I'd have to set it aside and play something else for awhile). It also managed to actually successfully combined turn based AND real time modes in the tactical battles, which was a pretty amazing feat.
If this is your style of game, I can't recommend Jagged Alliance 2 enough. It's hands down the BEST squad tac-combat game I have ever played, and because of all the mercenaries and missions and weapons available, it has a ton of replayability. It also has a HUGE mod base.
Good news! Seeing u guys have the 1st sacred on the 'shelves', i was hoping for D2 too. Fond memories of that will b comin back at dec 2nd :)
I already have a boxed version of D2 Gold, but i'm seriously thinking of buying this one from GOG, even just to have one ready-to-install package... to install the complete thing you need to deal with 9 CD ;-)

Just one question about JA2, is it the Gold or not ?
Because i have the PDF manual in front of me, and it has 56 pages too... as 'the downloadable content for free after purchase'...

wow! why on earth didnt they put it onto dvd. its not as if the game is so old that dvd drives were uncommon when the game released.
but ill definitely be getting Disciples 2. even if i dont like the game at least it supports gog
which i love because of having old games that are difficult to run normally on modern machines. (plus netbooks love them, apart from the odd one or two which just dont work at all)
I take it Gallean's Return and Rise of the Elves are still two seperate exe's, so you can't play the super high level campaigns with ROTE's balance changes?
To answer your question, the disciples series is more like an RPG with a hint of 4X gameplay than a full-blown strategy game. And it's GORGEOUS.
Too bad these games are not sold at 6$ each, i would buy them without thinking, but at 10 $, argh..
