The Thing is one of my favourite movies. Its part sci-fi and part lovecraftian horror i'd say.

Gambler: Ghost in the Shell is good too, but it's not a movie.

Ghost in the Shell was originally a Manga (Japanese comic book). Then there was an animated movie adaptation, which is probably what everyone in this thread is referring too. After that it was eventually adapted into an animated TV series.
Can't believe no one has mentioned.......
The Cube
Australian made I believe, part Horror, part Sci-Fi. Parts of the acting are a bit dodgy, but as a concept and an overall film, absolutely superb.
Mad Max for the win.

Robbeasy: The Cube

Yeah, concept was awesome, but I didn't particulary like the movie... They could have made it so better...
Of course, Mad Max :D I like Mad Max 2 the most..
Total Recall is pretty awesome, I remember it aired on TV when I was little, and the next day my friends and I spent the whole recess talking about the 3 breasts. Starship Troopers is great too, and then there is THX 1138, which while pretty slow, I do not regret purchasing. That's all I can see of my collection from where I am sitting.
I forgot to second Primer. It's an interesting movie. Not only because it was shot with $50,000 budget while looking better than many Hollywood B movies, but also because it has very complex storyline, some interesting ideas and a feel of real life. Engineering looks like engineering. People speak like people. Unfortunately, this is very rare.
I just remembered that i love the Bill and Ted movies. You know, technically they are science fiction. (-8

Dreamscape
The Last Starfighter
Highlander
and in the "so bad its good" category... Flash Gordon

+1 from me too. Love that movie. And even though the FX are dated, it's still creepy as hell.
Spaceballs...just in case there is a person out there who has not seen it yet....
The thing
They live!
Prince of darkness(sort of)
Dreamscape
Dune (incredible as no one mentioned it)
Lifeforce
I guess for now these are enough.
