Jesus, do you know how many massively popular games here I can't stand?

It's called taste, and it varies from person to person, like fingerprints. It is the very embodiment of the term subjective; no good no bad, not even any gray. It's also why I get so pissed by assholes that come in here and complain about "good games" and "bad games".

I think the novelty of mechanically solid full 3D exploration and combat really, really appealed to me. And personally at least, I didn't find any fault with the graphics back then, especially not with my 8 MB Voodoo 2 smoothing out the textures and bumping the framerate considerably.

Even something like Mario64, which even then looked a little rough to me, made me yearn for a N64.

I know, I know. It was more of a figure of speech to start my "hot take" with. Still, I remember at the time feeling really alienated with how much I disliked those early 3D games in 90s. Everyone seemed to think they were beautiful, and I was furious with them killing my favourite cartoon-like 2D platformers.

It's funny because for some reason I actually became much more tolerant of their terribly blocky graphics much later. So I hated them back when they were cuting edge, but now when they look entirely laughable I go back to play something like the first Jedi Knight and I'm like "oh what do you expect, it's from nineteen ninety fuck, at least the cheesy FMVs are awesome" and I have a lot of fun with it.

I hate System Shock! :D

Perhaps with so many awesome 2D-platformers from the post 3D-revolution era, it's partly because you now no longer have to fear that it will jeopardize a favorite genre of yours?
Incidentally that is why I kind of hate MOBAs, because I fear it's stagnating the RTS genre. So I would tolerate them a whole lot more if they weren't as popular :)

Ah that's kinda fine. Had you said System Shock 2 I would've hired someone to take you out!

I think it probably is partially that. And with MOBAs I wouldn't call it "fear of stagnating RTS genre", I'd outright say that MOBAs killed the genre dead. Other than Starcraft 2, which rode the wave of nostalgia nad Blizzard's brand recognition, was there a single other major RTS release in the last decade?

But with those early 3D games I think it's also simply the matter of expactations. In 1996 the hype was promising me something that looked awesome, while I thought it looks clearly worse than the 2D games. But going back to a game from 20 years ago today I know it will look like crap, I'm prepared to look for fun gameplay despite it.

And I won't lie - it probably helps that I get those oldies for peanuts these days (or outright for free like Unreal), when back in the 90s they would cost an arm and a leg.

TR1 on PC didn't originally have music; this wasn't an accident - it was by design. It also misses one or two enemies that were in the PlayStation version due to the worse relative 3d performance of the PC vs consoles at the time.

$199 games console versus $1999 PC ..................

Are all the games running on doxbox or is it only the first one. Is it using some kind of 3dfx patch to render the graphics?

Actually, the music being absent from the PC version is an error. It WAS supposed to have music. But I personally prefer it that way, it's more immersive for me. As for the performance, the console versions at 320x240 ran better, the PC could run perfectly fine at that resolution or chug along at 640x480. So performance wasn't really an issue (if you had a good PC, of course... a 286 would break just opening the game haha).

Only 1 uses Dosbox (Its still 3Dfx though as it uses a 3Dfx enabled version of Dosbox.). I think the other versions use Direct 3D.

TR1 has music on the PC though. Its only at certain moments though not all the time through out the game.
