It really isn't about the number crunch to me as character progression.
I like DQ, Final Fantasy and Disgaea in that you're characters gain levels, but also abilities. DQ at certain levels options unlock and you can chose a path, same with FF.
Disgage is all about getting stronger to take on stronger enemies, but it is so deep in systems and skill expansion, weapon improvements (item world is amazing) that even when the numbers start to look crazy (level 6,389) you are still facing challenges and growing characters.
I have nothing against D&D's idea of less levels, but always being stuck with magic missile for 70 percent of the games is boring and tiresome.
I don;t mid a low level cap so long as using skills/spells always them to upgrade and improve.
