Breja: You're kidding me, right? In the Mouth of Madness is probably his best film. It's so much better than Big Trouble in Little China it's not even funny.

Strijkbout: Different people different tastes, I didn't say it's bad I even like They Live and In the Mouth of Madness but I like Big Trouble In Little China more.
I know, I know, you're right. It's just that I really love Mouth of Madness, I think it's one of the most unique and clever films I've seen, and I've never understood what people see in Big Trouble. Must be something you need to be on the right "wavelength" to get, sort of like how for me Ninja III: The Domination was superbly entertaining, but many people would turn it off 15 minutes in and call it utter dreck.
Hello movie fans!

I revisited an old classic again, "Three Days of the Condor". A traditional spy movie from 1974 with Robert Redford as main protagonist.
Still amazing, how effective it was in keeping up the suspense and the motives of its figures in the shadows. And the low-fi tech of its era is always chilling for me.

Which other or more recent more cerebral spy movie would you recommend?

One that happens to be quite good as well, is "Tinker, Taylor, Spy" with Gary Oldman.

Kind regards,

Recently saw Serenity (the 2019 Matthew McConaughey movie, not the 2005 Firefly follow-up). The trailer that played in the theaters at the time intrigued me:

This could have been a decent movie if they played it straight with what the trailer teased, but this film has the most deflating plot twist that I've ever seen. After watching that trailer, would you ever guess that this movie is actually about

You might enjoy Reign of Fire, also with Matthew McConaughey, plus Christian Bale and Gerard Butler before they became super famous, as well as a beautiful Polish actress and a bunch of dragons. I hope you like it.

I watched that one in theaters, and actually just thought of re-watching it sometime after some dragon-themed media I saw yesterday reminded me of it. :)

I agree. I had a blast watching the movie, although from a D&D perspective I had a lot of issues/questions, like "Why does the main character - the bard - never cast a spell or do any buffs or heals? Well he did unlock a door at the beginning with magic but that was like one spell for one second.
Anyway, kudos to them for making a really decent and fun D&D movie. I hope they make a sequel.

Hello Foxgog!

Great to hear about your revisit to the classic "Three Days of the Condor"! It's indeed a timeless spy thriller with Robert Redford's stellar performance.

If you enjoyed "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" with Gary Oldman, you might want to check out "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" (1965) for a vintage yet gripping experience. For a more recent cerebral spy movie, "Bridge of Spies" (2015) directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks is a compelling choice. The film combines historical drama with espionage, providing a thought-provoking narrative.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on these recommendations!

It's a low-budget B-rated movie from 1993, but if you want a good cyberpunk movie, I recommend "No Resistance". It's still in print and you can find a copy online somewhere. Great movie. It was shot on a $7,500 budget, but it's extremely well done, and more true to the Steve Gibson novels.

It's only available on blu-ray, and it definitely has that VHS quality to it, but it's a great movie IMHO.

hudfreegamer: Forbidden Planet (1956)

Robbie the Robot was my favorite part of the movie and the special effects still hold up for the most part.

Otherwise it reminds me of other old sci-fi movies with their usual flaws.
thx

I've recently watched Damsel (2024) and I consider it as one of the best films I have ever seen. Ever.
At the start I was like "Not another dragon movie", but as the film was progressing, I was like "What is happening here?"! The only aspect I didn't like was the looks of the dragon, but other than that the film is really awesome.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzao Across the 8th Dimension

is pretty good.....though not a name that rolls off the tongue.
I've just watched A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night a 2014 Persian-language American Western horror film by Ana Lily Amirpour.
A vampire film shot beautifully in black and white with strong 80's Jim Jarmusch vibes.

I watched the 90s Moomin anime. (YT playlist link) At least the part that was dubbed and available to the public. It was a delight and I do so recommend giving a few episodes (or 70) a try.
