Breja: Indeed. Past is so lame. And old. We should forget about all past things, never refrence, draw any knowledge, experience or information from them them or compare current state of affairs with the past.
avatar
teceem: I didn't say "past", I said "nostalgia". Often it means an interpretation of the past devoid of its context, and very colored with personal feelings.
And it does not apply here in any way. The forum used to be much, much less toxic. That is a fact, not an interpretation colored by anything.

teceem: Everybody wants that.
GOG has a support system - it's not our (the forum) JOB to help people or even to be friendly about it when some communication impaired dude/dudette spouts "HELP GAME DON'T WORK THIS SUCKS". Are we trained or paid to do some good helpdesking?
avatar
GameRager: No, but I think that to such threads in the way some choose to on occasion might be turning some off who would've otherwise stuck around and become semi-regular/regular forum users.....those who don't "get" that that's how we reply to people here sometimes, I mean.

(Of course everyone is free to reply as they want.....I am just musing a bit here on this topic, is all)

hollibolli1970: You mean like Google translate? :D
Translating a sentence with apps gives most of the time hilarious results. :P

GameRager: It's still usually a lot more clear(even when mangled by such programs) than just writing something like "This thing no work....please help" as a title.
This is true, but i avoid such programs even if i am not fluid or have a proper grammar.
I learned my limited english only by playing games, because most german localisations are terrible.

Fair enough....I was just mentioning it as one way some that don't know much/any english & who don't have a dedicated forum for their native language could possibly put together a cohesive/clear english title when making a thread. :)

teceem: I don't disagree, but how useful is that comparison? Wasn't it already toxic compared to the BBS from 25 years ago? Or compared to society a 100 years ago when people all loved each other and Elvis wasn't promoting devil worship yet?
Shit, I don't know. I thought it could be a reminder of the fact that since it wasn't a dumpster fire a few years back then maybe it doesn't have to be now either. But you're right. We should just be total assholes to each other - the fact that we can come up with some nonsensical hypothetical example of unachieveable utopia clearly proves that.

We also should keep polluting the shit out of the planet. After all, at almost every point in human history the world was more polluted than at any even more distant past moment. Therefore, warning that the world is getting even more polluted is moronic.

I think I will call this the Linear Temporal Law of Acquiescence. Never try to rectify a deteriorating situation.

I really don't see how a forum where community managers claim that swastikas are okay avatars, or that white supremacist symbols accompanying white supremacist rants are probably just random images resembling white supremacist symbols, could turn toxic in any way shape or form.
Internet is angry in general, but yeah it has been worse on here lately. As a longtime member I can say I think a lot of the more positive people left, and I miss them. I will also say though that there's a lot of spammy topics about the same complaints over and over, and it can get grating. There's a balance to be had.

Also everyone who plays games on PC should be sent to PC Gaming Wiki nowadays for almost any issue. We should train people to make it second nature.

This may sound harsh, but: Imo a little blurb should pop up with a list of posting guidelines when making a thread(make clear titles, no slandering/libeling the site or users in titles or the OP post, etc)....either as plain text or via a link.....then maybe give new users one freebie/chance to mess up, and if they do it again(clearly ignores the posting guidelines when making a thread) then their thread should be removed or locked and they should have to try again.

These meta posts commenting on the state of the forum are so boring. Who cares?

Well obviously everyone here, else we most likely wouldn't have posted.

Also what else is there to talk about? Most threads on page 1 are GOG's own threads, forum games, misc threads, etc.....essentially not much more exciting stuff gets posted here that often(although many could do so, the problem is many seem to not want to bother doing so....of course that's their call to make)

1. Okay, yeah. That's a fair point but after so many years/encounters with this kind of thread you start to be able to tabulate which ones are dense stumps and those who actually have a clue but just need a hand.

2. Though the reality is, if games are slipping though the cracks, that doesn't speak confidence in the GOG databasing protocol, of either synchronization or recording.

3. And to the first point I can basically copy/paste the general gist. But as others have mentioned, it really isn't our job.

Until this very year, (or at least, in recent times) GOG didn't even have proper moderators to their hand because of their bizarre (probably legally enforced) hiring practices.

And much of the forums are a complete shambles in need of a dire update. Necromantic threads, organizational issues, and a general lack of specific tools, BBcode in 2020.
