Rusty_Gunn: it was easy enough to know that it didn't sound like it was for me when Half-life 2 was the thang fast forward to 2010 in an effort to avoid steam (Fallout New vegas) I preordered a game on Amazon that had NO mention of being a "Steam-on-disc" it turned out to be THE WORST PC game install experience I've ever had (including the time when a legit game CD was blank) & my experience goes far enough back to a time that installing a game meant you might need to type it in yourself.
Half Life 2 was one of the worst installation experiences I had, though I have to say that typing a game yourself definitely beats that, and the reason you don't think so is probably that you were young at the time or don't remember it well. Just going over the list of data in a C64 (or VIC20) game to find the one number you typed wrong was a terrible chore (which of course you take in stride as a kid).

That said, buying on Steam and installing from the Steam app is one of the easiest installation experiences, and generally beats any disc based installation, as long as you have a decent internet connection.

dick1982: i've tasted shit and tried using steam before. it tasted worse than i thought(very bitter), therefore steam is truly shit.

tinyE: Interestingly enough, shortly after I made that post I tried to get my dachshund to use Steam and she bit me.

The cat just laughed and went back to playing Terraria.
Somehow the connection between using Steam and eating shit makes total sense to me. I get it, buddy. I get it.
Steam works most of the time, it's convenient and you can get games for a good price if you have the patience to wait for on of their sales. But I have to admit, I would rather buy a game here on gog if I have the choice.

darthspudius: I'm not picking on you specifically but how do people know whether they like or dislike Steam until they actually use it? You'd think any kind of adult would be out of that kind of thinking thanks to being force fed vegetables as children.

What was the problem on install? I bought it day one also and all I had to go through was inserting your code then install a large portion off the disc only to wait for a patch. It was quite simple and it still works fine.
I don't use steam, uplay, or any of the other ones out there. There are no features associated with them that is of any interest to me. I have a room full of DVD, consoles, etc. so have plenty of backlog to keep me going at least two lifetimes, so no need to jump at the next big thing. Would rather wait and own the product.
Im playing a lot with cs:go and steam is always running on my pc because of the chat.
So i am not boycott steam games.

I wonder if the people who like it understand what pathogens are. Gee the immune system better be up to scratch.

It also provides zero nutrients... with very few exceptions.

No, I'm not talking about Steam even though it may seem like it. Referring to the shit eating conversation :)

Fairfox: "Boycott" adds a sense of deliberate, charged stand-making I don't really have; I've grown tired of the client for lots of reasons: the prices, the DRM (sometimes upon additional DRM) factor, the opened floodgates of nastiness, Valve's oft-shady practices, etc, and for those reasons combined I've simply stopped buying anything there. It's been many months now and I honestly don't miss going to their Store. I occasionally play Nuclear Throne on the client, or Broforce, but never any AAA game. S'why I like GOG outside of DRM-free; lots of nice, smaller games much of the time.
Could you elaborate a bit? What nastiness?
I installed steam once in order to get access to the demo of "Pier Solar" because it's offered only there....
THANKS to the Developers for that stupid decision!
After that I deinstalled steam again quickly and never touched it again.*
Now Pier Solar is in good company between my other games in the GOG shelf.

That is my steam 'history'.

*) As you can see, offering stuff like demos etc. exclusively on steam doesn't mean more (new) customers automatically.
I don't boycott Steam or Origin, they're just the last on my list of places to get a game. Steam lower than Origin.

gog.com is the first place to get a game, unless a physical copy is being offered.
Basically I haven't been using Steam for buying games for more then a year now. I did play a couple of them like Crusader Kings or Dead Island and Dead Space but those are games from my backlog from years before. For me the biggest reason is the intrusive, unnecessary client and unnecessary secondary drms like uplay, origin, steamworks and others that come with games on Steam. I mean if I wanted to pirate the game I would have downloaded it an hour after release from torrent sites and not buy it in a store.

For example I bought Anno 2070 which came first as a game without UPlay account, same with Ruse (retail version) and now those games are not really usable anymore cause you need another third party account named Uplay to play the game without any reason.

The only good side from Steam I ever liked were the sales that allowed me access to games that I otherwise never would have had the money to buy. Also in comparison to others I never had any issues with games not working on Steam.

The saddest thing though was that till last year I did not know that I, as everybody else am a subscriber to steam subscription service which means I don't own any game there which was, next to drm-free installers without the need for a client one of the main reasons why I switched to gog. But believe me when I say that im tempted to buy games on Steam knowing that most games I would love to play will never arrive to gog (RTS niche genre and all that). But since my budget is very limited I just wait for a possible gog release (I mean I am grumbling about C&C constantly when I could have bought it on Origin but I don't need another pointlessly limited drm version).

So what RTS game ticks your fancy?
Red Alert, Zero Hour, Tiberium Sun?

Grey Goo, Supreme Commander, Homeworld?
I have not Boycotted STEAM and it actually does some things rather well. Given the choice however....I choose DRM free with GoG...I like to own the games I buy as well as back them up If i like. GoG is also getting better (I've been onboard for quite some time) in terms of community services like chat, Galaxy, games available etc.
