tinyE: XD No I'm on a satellite with a VERY limited bandwidth and a shit connection. Maybe I'm wrong here, and if I am please I want to learn, if I have to be on line to play and I lose my connection, even if just for a minute, doesn't that mean when I get it back I have to restart my game?

If that isn't the case that I may be WAAAAAAAYYYY off on this whole thing. :P

I remember once I tried an MP session of Diablo 2 and the other players got pissed off that I kept leaving and then reentering the game every five minutes. XD

snowkatt: that is only true for games that need a permanent online connection even for single player like diablo 3
Origin does not, but you do need to go in and turn off the connection as soon as you start the game. Diablo 3 sucks because I still want to try that.

As for the others, I guess I should monitor my bitching from now on. :P

the console version doesnt do that actually

and the real reason for the persistent connection in the single player mode is because blizzard wants to whore out the real auction house

but my knowledge of diablo 3 is old so im not sure how accurate it is anymore
I still buy from Steam. I am a PC gamer, I like to play games. If I only played games that were DRM free only, my choices would be severely limited. Lets be honest here, the choices of GoG is 99% games that I have already played over the span of 30 years, with the 1% being something that is actually new. I am not going to limit my choices because of DRM that doesn't even have a negative effect on my at all.

If you lose connection while playing a Steam game, nothing happens, you continue to play. There is no game on Steam that needs a constant connection to Steam servers in order to be played, except for when you are playing a Multi-player game over the internet.

sherringon456: no game at all
If the future means every single game requires internet connection, I will stick to mostly MMOs or literally just play tabletop games. Life is too short to bother being tracked by companies with their petty schemes. If I'm going to play the bad guy in Dragon Age I don't want EA to track how malicious I can be. I don't want an account that contains personal information for everything, and I don't want to be tied to something like Steam that once it goes out of business I can't get any of my purchases back. Yes, no game is over DRM. Why? Because I can just easily save all this money, invest it into something and in a few years buy myself a Porsche or maybe even sooner if I get a used one.

QFT. There's so much to do in life. Spending time being hassled by DRM and accounts is just not worth it. Game companies that want my money will sell a product that fits my needs. Which include being able to run a game whenever and wherever I want without jumping through stupid hoops or worrying about identity theft.

Games that gate content behind an account manager simply kill my interest in them.
I'm abandoning steam and Valve all together. I'm sorry I'm so late to the party. I should have listened....

It's never too late though. Welcome to the party! Drinks are first to the right.

Thanks!

Dunno if you are really from Romania but I've worked with Romanians before. Fun guys.

The monetization of mods was the last straw for me and hopefully other people. Hard to tolerate that, plus shovelware from greenlight and early access plus DRM. etc. etc.

Hah, and let's not forget their trading cards and how they charge money when you sell them on the Steam store. They are making money out of literally nothing.
The lure of convenience has lead them to monopolize pretty hard. it's a shame.

I look forward to supporting companies like GOG who lead a good and ethical alternative to steam.

I'll be completely deactivating my steam account in the immediate future.

If your connection cut while playing a steamworks game, it will just queue whatever it need the connection for, like sending achievement or syncing saves, to the next time you're back online.
Although: if a game update has start downloading, you won't be able to play that game until it's finished. If you use the save on cloud thing, your autosave/quicksave/checkpoint progression may get lost in syncing.
And if your connection cut before you launch the steam program itself, you won't be able to play until it's back. Unless you ask it before to go in offline mode, but then you won't get updates, and won't be able to buy/install new games. And when you eventually put steam back in online mode, you better hope your connection is in a good mood, because it won't let you back in offline before every game update has been downloaded.

+1!
I haven't boycotted too many games until recently, but I know that after Valve's recent implementations (Greenlight, Early Access, paying for mods) I knew that I was done with them after eight years. I forgot about GOG and the old account that I had - I couldn't access it, so I made another. While the original plan when I bought my gaming/unit was to eventually install virtualization software and Windows so I could play the Windows-exclusive Steam games (Ys and LoH: Trails in the Sky mainly), Valve's not getting the hundreds of $ that I was going to throw at them this fall.

I wish I had the money now so that I can start buying at least the Mac versions of games that I want to further move away from Valve and Steam, but for the moment I can't. That would complete the boycott in a more satisfactory manner.

GOG tends to have big sales every few months, so you should be able to buy GOG versions of some of your Steam games soon enough. Plus, they started that whole "reclaim your games" deal, where they offer you free GOG versions of games, if you already own Steam or retail versions. Only a few games so far, but they probably intend to add more in the future.

Personally I don't boycott Steam. I just don't buy any games there. :|
