fortune_p_dawg: i've been waking up at 4am unable to get back to sleep, tossing and turning, knowing i have to get up for work in two hours. it sucks and is fucking with my workouts regimen.

this has been going on for like two weeks now, very irritating.
What you need is the sweet, soft sleep provided by Oblivion :P

What have you tried?
I'm currently sleeping on the floor, just using a thin yoga mat and no mattress. It's healthier supposedly, in a multitude of ways (posture etc). First week was rather unpleasant, could only sleep 3-4 hours at a time but the second week was already easier, now I don't feel any discomfort. Finding it difficult to fall asleep though but as with all good habits, this will take some time. Still only sleeping for 5 hours at a time and I don't yet feel anywhere as rested as on a real bed (I have a very comfortable bed) but one thing I've noticed already is that it's massively easier to get up in the morning if you sleep on the floor. It's like you've been transported back to the Stone Ages where we were hunters and slept on the hard cave floor in some kind of stand-by mode so you can immediately jump into action when a sabre-toothed tiger comes to eat you. In other words, even with little sleep there is much less grogginess than if you sleep on a bed. I'm gonna keep it up to see how things go long term.

Erikspilivink: Currently, the moon is aligned in a perfect way which allows it to shine through the blinds and onto my head and my pillow. Furthermore, I wake up quite early every morning, at 6 am, two hours before my alarm.
I have an easy solution to that problem, been using this myself: cover your eyes with a soft towel or t-shirt or some such, works like a charm.
I got an urge to play Civ IV+The transition of seasons finally trundling inward. Thankfully, the marathon timescale has put the former on the backburner.

You slut.

I can't sleep on my back, don't know why but I just can't.

I can only sleep on my side.
-Did you sleep well?

-No, I made a few mistakes.

You remain the best poster on GOG, period.

I have suffered from insomnia most of my life, until I had a bunch of kids. My advice is have 3 kids as quickly as possible. Then you will sleep - not perfectly - but better than you have ever slept in your life.

Gheers.

PS - I had brussel sprouts cut in half, doused in balsamic vinegar, fried in a pan - served next to salmon pan fried with lemon and capers 0 plus a six-pack of 9% ale plus chili infused chocalete. You ar e now jealous.

cheers.

Sounds like you have a guilty conscience.
Always - but goes with working nightshift...

trouble is I'm on a 2 week break and my sleep pattern is still fucked

Shadowstalker16: Due to a combination of heat and stress, I haven't been sleeping well for the past few days either. I don't know if it has to do with my sleeping position either. I usually sleep with my chest down and for the past few days I only fall asleep while lying on my back, probably because the fan feels cooler that way. I've tried eating stuff before bed and not eating stuff and only eating easier to digest stuff and nothing really works.

What have you tried?

fortune_p_dawg: i sleep on my back typically, but waking up in the wee morning hours has me tossing and turning and not being able to get comfortable. when i go to bed at night (usually around 11) i fall asleep just fine, it's just the matter of staying asleep.
Sounds like you're a light sleeper. I think I am as well, but I always find it difficult to not sleep a few minutes after waking up. Something I do when I don't want to wake up in the early morning is drinking lots of water before bed so I'll have to get up to pee in a few hours, and that ticks off one reason for which I may wake up in the early morning. It probably varies from person to person but I find drinking 3 full glasses before bed at 11:30 wakes me at around 1:30-2 am.

I've slept on the floor a few times too I always seem to wake up feeling like I got THE perfect amount of sleep. I don't know if its just because I'm not used to it and feel like there should be some difference or there are actual reasons behind it, but now that I think of it, it sure did the trick. I've heard many people say sleeping on the floor on a reed mat is the best. I need to try it more.

Also, anyone ever sleep open-air / without a roof over your head? I think about sleeping on the terrace every week or so because of the heat but I decide against it because of mosquitoes, although now even they don't seem to be much of a problem since all the water seems to have dried up.

I've been sleeping terribly for the past few years just like that, go to bed post midnight completely exhausted, wake up at 4am, still exhausted... Work was unbearable, workouts were painful. Sleeping aids or medical assistance did not help.

My solution was to actually stop fighting with my sleep cycle. Instead I moved my workout routine to 5am. So I get up at 4, breakfast+digestion, lifting, coffee, and then off to work at 7. Then I go to bed earlier at about 10pm during weekdays, weekends are longer so that I can socialize. This worked wonders for me.

Of course, I have a home gym that makes this much easier to pull off, but I guess an early/24hr gym nearby would also work.
