While everyone is entitled to their opinions, placing a judgement of this movie being "bad" in the traditional sense or even praising it, is awkward to me. Because, the movie is not an original idea, and in this case, it's a butchered and mutilated version (with culture alteration included) of a brilliant original piece of work. Just like if someone drew a completely original piece of art, I can call it bad, because it is what it is. However, if someone made a copy-painting of a painting, it's not so much as bad but a bad copy-cat. But the copy painting itself has no value to be judged as it's a copy of another work. Without the foundation, one won't understand or is even looking at the value, which is a must before a judgement with merit can be placed.
In other words, I don't know how could anyone even watch seriously (and judge) a show that is greatly converted from a culture that is completely outside of the west. Absolutely zero of these Japanese live-action adaptations have gone over well in terms of value. Some people may like it, some may hate it, but they are largely meant to be seen as joke movies.
P.S: I rarely say it like this (as I tend to feel that taste should be in the eye of the beholder), but I think that anyone who can't see the original Ghost In The Shell anime series/movies as good, have kind of lost their sense of what is "good". And I'm someone who cares more for the niche stuff, and don't even bother with what is actually good these days.
