The original GitS is a single volume Manga. It got a couple of Manga sequels (GitS 2.0 and 1.5), both single volume as well. It became rather popular world wide thanks to the anime movie adaption back in the middle of the 90s*.

*That said, author Masamune Shirow has had a lot of his other works adapted to anime series and movies over the years as well. GitS only happened to be the one that became famous worldwide first.

Well has there ever been a well made movie from Manga?

Maybe it just doesn't translate well.

Whats not to like about hawt mostly naked cyborg chicks with guns?

Not much.

I am a negatory on hate for this movie, quite the opposite without trying very hard. It wasn't as good as Dredd, but one under.

That I can actually agree with :P

Well, the first GitS movie IS very well made. But I suppose you're talking about movies with real actors, not animation. In that case, I think OldBoy, the Korean one, is considered great.

There are probably other good ones as well, I just don't remember right now.

I've heard people swear by those new Rurouni Kenshin (aka Samurai X) movies.

Haven't seen them myself, I need to get around to seeing the anime first.

Good memory! I really enjoyed all three of them. The first one is the best.
A review said - lots of style but lacks a lot of real substance.
Ill pass :(
Now I'm really confused since I had initially wanted to avoid it but after breja's review I'm thinking it might not be as bad. :P

Breja: Disclaimer- I have not seen the original anime, any of the other anime, read the manga, and I don't care about them. I went in knowing nothing except for what I saw in the trailers.

This movie is a piece of crap. It's amazingly bad. It's been a while since I saw something this terribly incompetent, and if this isn't the worst movie of the year, then we're in for some really shit later on.
Hmmm I haven't seen the new movie yet, but I remember the original movie being cyberpunk was really really good (although was a little slower paced done from the 80's and 90's, in the same line of sexual and adult works like that of NinaScroll and Bio Hunter).

From what you're describing they did a really bad job of trying to convert it to live action and CGI. Makes me iffy about watching it.

Falci: Funny thing, though: I can see where all of your criticism comes from, seriously, but most of those things didn't really bother me that much.

I enjoyed the movie a lot for what it is and was actually relieved that:

A) it doesn't try to directly adapt the 95 movie, the manga or Stand Alone Complex.
B) Despite all of the Hollywood cliches it adds to the story, they didn't fuck up Section 9's camaraderie.

Yes, it lacks subtlety, and a lot of the narrative techniques it tries to use are done so in such a clumsy way that they end up causing minor plot holes. I think all the emotional scenes fall completely flat due to how poorly timed and arranged they are. And while the visuals are great, they never know when they need to be subdued or properly organized, causing it to feel like clutter very often.
Been a little while since I watched the first two movies, and the SAC.

If memory serves me right, the first movie was about the main character who was investigating an escaped AI. The second movie went into soul dubbing and sexual dolls.

The SAC (first season) had to be before the first movie? And got into the laughing man to track the hacker down and a bunch of side stories, mostly daily missions and things they end up having to deal with. The second SAC... was a lot more on the unmanned AI spider-tanks (Chimodachis?)?

Damn I can't remember enough details on all this. Probably been 4 years since I touched any of this.

I saw this yesterday. Can understand where the criticisms are coming from, but I thought it was well worth seeing and my companion agreed.

I have seen the animated movie off VHS sometime in the 90's, but don't remember much of it.

SamMagel: You think Hollywood would stop here ?

Just look at the trailer of Deathnote.

They messed up every single main character from the manga.

You can count on Hollywood to destroy every Japanese masterpiece ever released including the Dragonball Z film.
NO no no no! why must hollywood destory all the things i like?

First Hiroshima, then Godzilla, now this.

It's never ending.
