LoboBlanco: Some people don´t like it, although, since some of the genres I like (RTS/FPS) involve doing that, well........ :D
That said I really didn´t like when I had to defend myself from the dogs in COD :(

Exoanthrope: If the game requires you to kill people, then it's fine; but animals?! That's too much!
Yep. If they'd have put guardian cats then I'd have had to smash buttons with my eyes closed. They should stick to biped animals so I can blaze through without remorse.

Agreed. :D

At my inn, when people ask of we are 'pet friendly' our response is, "depends on the owner" and that's no joke. I've never been lied to, screwed over, or put down by an animal.

awalterj: Every time you sanitize your hands, you're killing off more real lives (bacteria) than you ever virtually killed in all your games combined.
true but these are not really considered intelligent life forms so maybe that makes it less bad.

As far as killing in games.... first i dont approve of any violence, BUT
in movies theres loads of it and unfortunately also in real life.

The thing is however that a splat sound and some gore like a simple puddle of red goo would be more then sufficient for a game, aswell as a movie, its those damned killing in detail that makes it questionable, it is this point that should be taken out in a game, theres no need to whack someone of in a game with all the gory details.

If you drive a car in a game and you bump one off its enough to hear a blam or crack splat sound and maybe some goo on the window shields, theres no need for flying limbs everywhere nor a lot of sounds of pain and agony, just a sprralat ! and some tomato ketchup on the car and windshields.

Besides any developer who gets off creating horrifying animations showing limbs flying of in full gory detail must be missing something in the good old brain, games can sell millions without all that violent crap.

Look if in game like jagged alliance a srite gets shot and kaboom he flies through the air on the ground thats okay, i am talking a comic animation, nowadays they use 3d rendered lifelike human parts and that is not needed.
So blowing away a stick man okay, blowing away human like characters with all gory details is not okay.

Space invaders is 'killing' but differnt , the miute it gets to real life like its way out of control and that should be prevented.

OP wulf OP thunderbolt, coinups.... where they shoot 2 kill, thats differnt it was a comic killing
there is however no need to make it real life like thats where the line should be drawn.
I have 600 games or more there is no game where you see flying limbs around that look like its a real person, i dont buy those games and wont play those games.

But it is up to a person him/herself to decide if they want to play and buy these games, if one needs these games one should be able to buy them.

I myself will never buy these, but....
I als dont believe in zombies or vampires or werewolves, but if these should exist and would be threatening normal life then it be war all over cause sometimes you have to kill and maim, and things like werewolves/zombies and the rest are not normal so blasting these away is ok.
Ow also maiming aliens that want to takeover earth are okay to blast away.

No; killing a collection of body models and hair textures and pixels is not evil. There are far worse thing we do in real life unknowingly that hurts anyone more than shooting pixels on a screen. Like thinking simulated violence is worse than real violence; or ignoring real violence altogether when it doesn't match with a story. What do you hear more in the news; Kim Kardashian's ass or police harassment? Just the act of bumping into someone and running off without apologizing causes more harm than ''sinning'' in games.
Nope.
I belive that if people are given the chance to be super-violent in a videogame, it will actually make them less violent in real life, since they are able to fulfill their desires in a videogame. (+ they spend their time playing vidogames instead of vandalising the town)

The problem can only emerge, if some kid can not take games and reality apart, and starts "playing" in real life too. But imo that should be blamed on parents who don't parent, and not on the game :P
I guess depending on the game it may be punished (or rewarded) by the in-game gods?
I think it's more a question of taste and mental well-being than morals. Unless you force anyone to watch while you're playing, it's up to you to decide whether it has a bad effect on you or not (e.g. does it make you feel bad, depressed, sick, more aggressive, more apathic towards real life violence, do you get nightmares about it, does it influence your views of real life politics etc.).

In some games it is objectively "wrong" to kill certain people though and will make you lose the game. ;)
I once virtually killed a man just to virtually watch him virtually die.

Just once?
I remember back in the day, I would kill my Sims in The Sims 1 , all the time, via starvation, drowning, fire, etc. I rarely did it, but when I did I laughed because of the way they reacted. How they act in fire situations was cracking me up. Instead of running away from a giant fire, my Sim would run towards it to scream, and get caught himself lol!

If you do some Googling you can find some great vids of people using Rollercoaster Tycoon to butcher people. Sick but funny as hell.

I have Roller Coaster Tycoon Deluxe on Steam, and its funny, I don't want to kill the people, but building roller coasters or the dreaded "Water Slide" ride, every time I build that water slide, I guess I get hills wrong or something and the boat goes FLYING off screen LOL
I only have a problem with violence in games when people get their fun by harming innocents. That can include npc pixel people or animals because it's just sick and evil. It especially includes real people in multiplayer games if they are minding their own business, crafting, questing, whatever. I wouldn't use the label of "sin" but it sure is a bad psychological path to tread.

Hehe, I should use that line at the hotel I work at.
Admittedly, I was being half sarcastic with that remark, but I seriously do have more empathy for animals than people. All is fair in video games, though.

Okay that might get you fired. XD I can get away with it because it's a family owned and operated place, and until I can prove my birth certificate is forged (pray to god) i have a little more leniency. :P
