I see some discussion lately about a few people wanting Galaxy to add cloud save support to their GOG games. So I thought i'd share a utility i've been working on and use myself to add a kind of cloud saving support to all my games.

Official Web Site
Download

I call it Game Backup Monitor, it monitors for any games you want to backup and then compresses a backup of your saves for that game when you finish playing. If you choose to use a cloud folder (you don't have to), you can use the program to track and restore saves on any other computers you want. It runs on Windows or Linux.

Right now the list of games I have preconfigured is around 250.

List of pre-configured games

You can use symbolic links and other backup utilities to accomplish the same effect, but my utility is unique in a few ways (and free) so I thought i'd share it. If anyone feels like giving it a try, i'd love some feeback.

Nice idea, but what's wrong with simply using something like DropBox for this?

Nothing really if you wanted to go that route, but some game's save files can build to an insanely huge amount of space, which is a concern for me in terms of space used and bandwidth usage. Also some games I don't want every single file in the save folder, such as graphics configurations, since my laptop will use wildy different settings than my desktop. And sometimes I just plain won't want the saves on my other computer and this gives the option to opt out a session if i want to. I also use this to backup/sync dosbox save games, which are sometimes just a single file in the installation folder of the game itself.

Something like DropBox (and I can't stress enough that you should use *something like DropBox*, not DropBox itself) is not video game specific and it's a bit cumbersome because some games use different folders to store their saves, so it ends up being a morose process, backing up all those saves and copying them to a new machine.

I will try this program and give you some feedback as soon as I can, thank you for sharing it!

Thank you. You make good points.
Unfortunately, I myself do not use cloud saves, having just one game computer, but I will remember this if things change.

What is the problem with DropBox itself? I use it from time to time to synchronise MaGog export files across machines.

Take Seven Cities of Gold for example. The saved games are the files game0.sav to game4.sav in the installation folder. You would either need to copy the files to another folder to be uploaded, or upload the whole folder to dropbox. Main reason to use a utility isn't the place to upload them, it's making sure you upload only the saves, not everything.

Edit: And of course, I reply to the question you were asking in your previous post, not the one you are asking here. I blame lack of sleep.

Even if you have only one computer (and most people only have one I imagine) you should still backup important files offsite. Cloud saving seems easiest to me.

I incrementally backup my entire HDD every week and carry the backup with me wherever I go.

This is a good example. My utility allows you to setup a game to either save an entire folder and exclude specific files, or you can choose to save only specific files or types, whatever is easier. This can be a confusing thing for some people due to the use of wildcards and such, that's why I hope to get a big list of preconfigured games so everything just works out of the box. I got 300 GOG games i can include in the official list, it's just the work of installing them all, configuring and testing each one.
I figured i'd necro this old thread instead of making a new one.

I've been refining my save game backup utility over the last few months and released a new version that should be the final beta. It saves me a ridiculous amount of time moving saves between computers and I know I always got another copy if things go bad.

If you're interested check it out at:

http://backupmonitor.sourceforge.net/

So far i've got 150 game configurations (mostly GOG games) already setup that can be imported.

http://backupmonitor.sourceforge.net/preconfiguredgames.php

Thanks, I hope someone else finds it as useful as me. :)

I currently having it flagged as an Alpha because I rewrote a lot of it recently, but it's a fully functional and stable app.

Can you not just copy the files you need to pen drive? I don't understand this whole gotta put everything on the net idea that people have nowadays. I buy games that don't require internet, so why would i want to put the one bit that is specifically me on the net?

RTFM. You can, and this utility will do so automatically (copy them to a pen drive). It doesn't upload anything anywhere, it just copies files to a folder you specify, whether said folder is one synced with a cloud service, one synced locally, a network share or a removable drive.

Interesting. What I was going for though was a case of: I only play one game at a time, its not that difficult to just copy the saves over to a pen drive at the end of gaming. I keep all my saves (from a long time ago), with my games on a separate HDD (which in turn is backed up quarterly to other HDD's which are stored internal or external to the house). Its only the day to day management of one or two files. I never use internet for anything storage-wise, i.e. don't rely on GOG to hold my games for me. I know, I have zero trust in anything :o)

Then this is clearly not for you. Not even sure whey you comment here, then.
